New lawn installation across Hereford, covering long Victorian back gardens, wide post-war suburban plots and everything between, with proper ground work before a single roll of turf goes down.
Hereford is a cathedral city on the River Wye, and its housing is a mix. Victorian streets close to the centre tend to have long, narrow back gardens, while the post-war suburbs have wider, flatter plots with front and rear lawns that have often been mown flat out for decades. Each calls for a slightly different approach, from how we bring materials in to how much soil improvement the lawn needs.
Our team lays new lawns and replaces old ones throughout Hereford and the surrounding Herefordshire villages. We start with a free visit so we can see the plot, check the soil and agree what you want from the space, whether that is a play area for children, somewhere for the dog or a neat lawn for a summer seat. Then we price the whole job clearly.
Long Victorian gardens often have a history. There may be old paths, buried ash and clinker, former vegetable beds and a slope towards the house. Post-war plots can be compacted from years of use and built-up thatch. In either case, we clear the old surface, break up the ground, take out rubbish and level carefully. The red-brown soils common across Herefordshire can set hard when dry and sticky when wet, so we add topsoil and open up the base where necessary, which gives the roots a better start.
Removing an old lawn is dirty work, but it is the right starting point if the grass is full of moss, weeds or bare patches. We strip it, dispose of the waste and prepare a clean bed. New natural turf is laid in staggered rows, with joints pressed tight and edges trimmed to borders, paving and fences. Because a long Hereford garden may be a barrow's trip from the street, we plan deliveries so turf is laid soon after arrival, while it is fresh, rather than left stacked up.
A lawn laid in a long garden needs watering right to the far end, so check that your hose reaches before the work begins. We give simple written advice on watering, mowing and keeping off the grass for the first weeks. Established lawns around the city can suffer from compaction, moss and dog patches, so we also offer lawn repairs, turf patching and renovation, such as scarifying, overseeding and filling hollows. That can often delay or avoid a full replacement, saving you money and mess.
Hereford is a Herefordshire cathedral city on the River Wye, with Victorian and post-war suburbs, and we work across both the city and surrounding villages, including Leominster, Ross-on-Wye, Ledbury and Bromyard. Gardens near the river can be damp for part of the year, while higher suburban plots may be drier and more exposed, so we adjust the preparation to suit. We offer a free visit and give a written breakdown so you can see exactly what is included.
We also take on lawn turfing work in nearby Leominster, Ross-on-Wye, Ledbury, Bromyard.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
Most average gardens take a few days from stripping to finished lawn, depending on size, access and weather. Larger or more awkward plots can take longer. We give a realistic idea at the free visit.
Not always. If your existing soil is good, we can improve it and level it. Where it is thin, stony or exhausted, adding clean topsoil gives the turf a far better base. We look at the ground and advise honestly.
Yes. Autumn is often a good time because the soil is still warm and rain helps rooting. Frost and waterlogging are the things to avoid, so we pay attention to the forecast before laying.
