Lawn turfing in Ludlow, where gardens range from tiny courtyards behind period houses to generous family plots, each needing turf matched to its shape and use.
Ludlow is a historic Shropshire market town, with its castle, its old streets and a great many period properties. Gardens here are anything but uniform. Some are small walled plots tucked behind town houses, while others are broad lawns attached to larger homes on the edges.
We lay lawns for all of them. The approach changes with the site, but the sequence is familiar: understand the ground, prepare it properly, lay good turf, and show you how to look after it. If you are renovating an old house or just fed up with a poor lawn, we can help with the whole process.
Older town gardens can sit on layers of history. Previous paving, buried building waste and compacted soil are all common finds. We deal with these before any grass goes down, clearing the debris, loosening the surface, and levelling with topsoil in the right places. Where a walled garden is small, the work is mostly by hand and takes care, so we do not damage walls, steps or planting. Larger plots allow us to even out bigger contours. Either way, the target is a firm base that drains and gives turf a fair chance.
Maybe your lawn has been dug up for building work, or perhaps it has simply worn out. Replacing it means removing the old surface, preparing the bed, and laying natural grass turf in tight rows. We trim neatly around the odd-shaped corners common in older gardens, cutting turf to fit around stone paths, trees and raised beds. For households with pets or children, a tough family-garden lawn is easy to arrange, and we are happy to explain what is realistic for the amount of use it will get.
Aftercare is straightforward if you know what to watch for. Water deeply rather than lightly, check the edges where turf dries quickly, and hold off heavy use until it has rooted. We give clear guidance at handover. For established lawns, repairs can be simple: cutting out a damaged section and replacing it, or renovating a worn area. Walled gardens often cast shade for part of the day, so we also suggest suitable approaches for those darker corners.
We work in Ludlow and on the roads around it, and can visit gardens near Tenbury Wells and Leominster too. Historic streets can mean narrow access, limited parking and, sometimes, a long carry to the back garden, so please tell us about these when you get in touch. We will visit, discuss your ideas and give you a free quotation. If a smaller repair would solve your problem, we will tell you that rather than suggest a full replacement.
We also take on lawn turfing work in nearby Tenbury Wells, Leominster.

Yes. Small spaces are quite suited to turf, and the work is largely by hand. Shade from walls matters, so we discuss which turf type will cope and how much sun the area gets.
It can be. We lift the worn turf, take it away, and prepare the soil underneath before laying anything new. Tell us if you would prefer to keep some of the existing soil.
It varies with the season and the weather. Turf looks like a lawn at once, but roots take several weeks to anchor. Be gentle with it during that time, and keep it watered.
