Landscaping for Malvern's hillside gardens and Victorian villas, where terraces, steps, retaining walls and drainage do the heavy lifting before any planting goes in.
Malvern is a hillside spa town beneath the Malvern Hills, and that setting defines its gardens. Many plots slope, sometimes steeply, and the Victorian villas that line the lower hillsides often have gardens that were once grand and are now in need of attention.
We offer garden landscaping in Great Malvern and the surrounding area. A typical visit involves walking the slope with you, working out where the usable space is and discussing how to gain more of it. We then provide a free quotation covering the groundworks, hard landscaping and planting you choose.
On a steep garden, flat ground is the most valuable thing you can create. Terracing cuts into the slope and holds it with retaining walls, producing level spaces for sitting, planting or play. Walls must be built with proper foundations and drainage behind, because soil on a slope holds a lot of water and weight. Steps link the levels and need to be safe, even and well drained. Taller walls can need engineering input, and we say so when a structure is beyond ordinary garden building. The result is often a garden that feels twice the size.
Victorian villas come with grand ambitions: terraces, paths, lawns and generous borders, often now overgrown or broken up. Renovating one begins by working out what survives. Old paths may be buried under turf, retaining walls may be leaning and drains may have failed. Repairs come first, followed by a layout that suits current needs. Garden renovations of this kind can restore the character of the property while making the space easier to maintain. Planting that suits a period house, such as structural shrubs and cottage-style perennials, finishes the picture.
Water naturally runs downhill, and in a hillside town it can cause real trouble if ignored. We look at where rainfall is going, whether it threatens a house or neighbour and how to manage it, with land drains, channels or soakaways as appropriate. Planting on slopes needs thought: ground cover holds soil, and mulch limits evaporation on drier banks. Thin or stony soil may need improving before borders are planted. Careful groundworks followed by planting gives a hillside garden a stable base and a mature look.
We work in Malvern and cover Upton upon Severn, Ledbury and Worcester too. Hillside streets can be steep and narrow, with limited parking, and gardens may be reached up steps or through the house. That affects how materials and tools are moved, so we plan for hand-carrying and smaller loads where required. Properties near the hills may have particular planning conditions, so it is sensible to check before changing boundaries or building larger structures. We are glad to discuss this at the free visit.
We also take on garden landscaping work in nearby Upton upon Severn, Ledbury, Worcester.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
In most cases we can improve it a great deal. Terracing, retaining walls and steps create flat areas and safe routes. How far you go depends on the gradient, soil, access and budget, which we discuss at the visit.
Higher walls carry more load and can need engineered design. We build ordinary garden retaining walls, and we tell you if a structure looks beyond that so you can get the right input before going ahead.
We plan for it. That can mean smaller deliveries, hand-carrying materials up steps and using compact machinery. We look at access at the quotation visit and explain how it might affect the way the work is carried out.
