Fencing in Malvern, where hillside plots and Victorian villa gardens need stepped panels, firm posts on slopes, storm repairs and gates matched to the house.
Malvern climbs the hillside beneath the Malvern Hills, and many gardens here are terraced, steep or oddly shaped. Fencing a level lawn is simple. Fencing a slope with retaining walls, steps and old trees is a different matter, and it is worth getting right the first time.
We install, replace and repair garden fencing in Malvern and Great Malvern. A free visit lets us check the slope, access and what is already there. Victorian villa gardens may also carry old stone walls and mature planting, which we take care not to disturb more than necessary.
Panels are rectangles and hills are not, so a fence on a slope is either stepped, with each panel level and a triangular gap beneath, or built board by board to follow the ground. Stepped panels are quicker and use standard sizes; board-by-board closeboard suits steep and uneven ground and gives a continuous line. Posts on a slope must be plumb, not square to the hill, and the ground may be thin over rock. We check with a probe before promising anything. Gravel boards can fill the gaps beneath stepped panels.
Gardens high on the hill take wind from every side, and on slopes there is an extra problem: soil creep. Heavy rain can soften the ground and let posts lean downhill. Repair may need deeper posts or bracing to stop the fence moving again. If a retaining wall sits near the fence, check it for signs of movement before work starts; a fencing team cannot fix a failing wall, and we would suggest a specialist. For wind damaged fence repairs we replace what has failed and strengthen the line where we can.
Victorian villas often have fine front boundaries in keeping with the period, and a new fence there should be modest: picket, post and rail or simple closeboard in natural tones. Rear gardens that overlook the hills may suit slatted fencing that does not block the view. Gates on slopes need thought, since the ground may rise or fall across the opening. A gate that swings freely on a level path may catch on a slope, so hinge height and swing direction are worked out on site, and posts set firmly.
We cover Malvern, including Great Malvern, and the surrounding area such as Upton upon Severn, Ledbury and Worcester. Steep roads, narrow drives and limited parking are common, so we ask about access when you get in touch. Carrying panels up steps or along sloping paths takes longer, and the quotation allows for that. Free visits are standard, and we are happy to repair a single section as well as replace a whole boundary.
We also take on garden fencing work in nearby Upton upon Severn, Ledbury, Worcester.

A stepped fence uses standard panels and is quicker; a boards-on-site fence follows the slope and has no gaps. On steep ground, many prefer the continuous line. We look at the gradient and explain which suits your garden.
We check how the fence interacts with the wall. Posts should not push on, or be hidden in, a wall that might be moving. If the wall looks unsound, we would suggest it is checked by a specialist first, since fencing will not solve a wall problem.
Shallow rock makes digging slower, and may need a different fixing approach. We probe the ground during the visit, and where holes are difficult we explain what that means for the work before you decide.
