Artificial grass in Malvern, where sloping hillside gardens and Victorian villa plots beneath the Malvern Hills need careful levelling, firm edging and sensible drainage.
Malvern is a hillside spa town beneath the Malvern Hills, and Great Malvern in particular is full of Victorian villas on steep or terraced plots. Flat lawns are rare here, and the slope shapes almost every decision about groundwork.
Mowing a steep lawn is hard work, which is one reason artificial grass appeals. It only works well, though, if the base is built to hold on a slope. We visit, look at the fall and access, and set out the work in a free quotation.
Slopes need more thought. We work out whether the ground should be terraced, cut and filled, or simply compacted to follow the existing fall. Turf and topsoil are removed, a membrane laid, and stone is compacted in layers, with extra care that nothing slides. Edges and the top and bottom of each slope are fixed firmly, since a lawn on a gradient will creep if poorly held. On steeper ground, retaining detail may be needed, and we say so plainly rather than hoping it holds.
On a slope, safety and practicality count as much as appearance. A dry artificial surface gives better grip than wet, muddy turf, but a steep lawn can still be slippery when covered in leaves or frost. Children enjoy rolling and running, so a softer pile is kind to them. For dogs, the free-draining base keeps things clean, but rinse regularly. Where there is a level area for chairs or play equipment, we can build it into the groundwork so you have a stable spot.
Water runs downhill, so drainage on a hill plot should be planned in advance. The base lets rain through, and the fall carries it toward the lower boundary, where we may suggest a channel or soakaway so it does not flood a neighbour or the house below. Brushing, clearing leaves and rinsing keep the surface in order. Shade from villa trees and walls favours moss, so treat it early. A well-drained, well-fixed slope lawn should hold its shape without much trouble.
We cover Malvern and nearby places including Upton upon Severn, Ledbury and Worcester. Many local gardens are reached by steps or narrow paths, and materials may have to be carried up or down by hand, which affects how the work is planned. Victorian villas often have beautiful but awkward gardens, and we enjoy working out the right solution. Get in touch for a free visit, and we will give you honest advice on what is realistic for your plot.
We also take on artificial grass installers work in nearby Upton upon Severn, Ledbury, Worcester.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
Often yes, up to a point. The base and edges must be firm. Very steep ground may need terracing or retaining, which we would assess first.
It can be when wet, frosty or covered in leaves. Keeping it brushed and clear helps, and a sound base improves grip over muddy grass.
By hand, using barrows and buckets where necessary. It takes longer, which we allow for when we plan and quote the job.
