Northleach is a quiet stone-built wool town, and an artificial lawn here should look settled and tidy, with a firm base and edges that respect the surrounding walls and paths.
Northleach is small and quiet, with stone houses along its main streets and gardens that run back from them. Thin soil over limestone is common across this part of the Cotswolds, and lawns often dry out brown in summer and turn spongy in winter.
Artificial grass tackles both extremes, but it should be treated as a construction job, not a carpet. We build the lawn up from the ground, check what lies beneath, and aim for something that still looks right when the weather turns.
Shallow soil over stone means digging can be slow, and sometimes the natural rock helps, since it makes a firm foundation. We remove the turf and loose topsoil, level the exposed ground, and lay a graded stone base in compacted layers. A permeable membrane goes on top. Occasionally we find buried rubble, old paths or roots in older gardens, which must be cleared to avoid settling later. For edging, we use whatever matches the existing boundaries, whether stone, timber or concrete, and fix it so the turf stays pulled taut. Good preparation takes patience but saves headaches.
A village garden has to cope with everything. Children play football, dogs run laps, and friends set up chairs. Choose a yarn that suits the use: dense, resilient fibres for busy lawns, softer ones for toddlers' areas. Pet-friendly artificial grass needs an open backing and a free-draining base, otherwise odours linger. For play areas, we can include a shock-absorbing layer beneath. It is worth thinking early about where the sun hits, because south-facing lawns warm up on hot days and might need a lighter blend.
Limestone ground often drains freely, but clay pockets and compacted paths do not. We observe how your garden handles heavy rain, and plan stone depth and outlets accordingly. After fitting, brush the pile to keep it upright, remove leaves before they break down and check edges after heavy rain. Moss or algae can form in shade and on north-facing sides, and it is easiest to treat when it first appears. A well-built synthetic lawn needs little effort, and it should still look tidy long after the novelty has worn off.
We work in Northleach and the wider area, including Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold and Cirencester. Many properties here are older, with garden walls and gates that limit what can be brought in, so we plan access carefully before starting. We will not push you towards artificial grass if it is not suitable, and we are happy to explain alternatives. Contact us with your garden size and what you want from it, and we will arrange a free quote visit.
We also take on artificial grass installers work in nearby Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, Cirencester.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
It can be, since the shallow soil is dug out anyway and a firm base laid. The main job is making sure water drains through rather than sitting on rock or clay beneath.
Quality products are treated to resist UV, but all colours soften slowly over time. Lighter areas near south walls may age slightly faster. Ask to see a sample, and ask how it is intended to hold its colour.
Yes. Planting beds can stay, and the edging is set to separate them cleanly from the lawn. We mark the layout with you before cutting so the shape is exactly as you want it.
