Fencing designed for Stroud's steep valley gardens, with stepped or raked panel runs, deeply set posts, repairs after storms, and gates that hang correctly on terraces and slopes.
Stroud sits where several steep valleys meet at the edge of the Cotswolds, and flat gardens are the exception. Many properties climb up a hillside or step down in terraces, so the usual advice about fence posts and panel sizes needs adapting.
SPR Trees and Landscapes covers Stroud for garden fencing, and we are used to working on a gradient. We will walk the slope with you, check how the soil behaves and where water runs, and explain a sensible way to build the boundary. The free quotation sets this out clearly, including how many posts, what type of panel and how gates will be handled.
On a slope, a fence either steps in level sections or follows the line of the ground. Stepped panels are quick and look tidy, but leave a triangular gap beneath each section, which can be filled with a board or a bank of soil. Raked fencing built on site follows the slope smoothly and keeps the bottom edge close to the ground. We choose between them with you, then set the posts deeper on the downhill side where the pull is greatest, so the run stays square for years.
Water runs downhill in the valleys, and fences collect it. Soil softens, retaining banks shift, and posts that were firm last year begin to lean. When we repair a failing fence in Stroud, we look at what is happening to the ground behind it, because replacing a post without fixing the drainage or support often means doing it again. We repair broken panels and posts, re-set runs, and recommend drainage or a deeper footing where needed. For something urgent, we can make the boundary safe first.
Terraced gardens often need short fences at several levels, and these are good places for slatted or open styles, which feel lighter and handle the wind. Where privacy matters, closeboard on the lower boundary does the job. Gates on steep paths need generous clearance underneath and a good strong frame so they do not drop at the latch end. We hang gates to open the right way, either uphill or along the path, and fit latches at a comfortable height.
We cover Stroud and travel to Gloucester and Cirencester for fencing work. The town's steep valleys mean access can be awkward, with narrow lanes, steps and parking limits, so we ask about these when planning materials and delivery. Some jobs call for carrying posts and panels uphill by hand, and we allow for that. Steep land can also make estimates more variable, which is why we visit rather than quote blind. Ask SPR for a free quote and advice on your slope.
We also take on garden fencing work in nearby Gloucester, Cirencester.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
It can take longer, because of deeper posts, stepping and access, so the labour may rise. We cannot quote without seeing it, which is why we visit and explain the reasons behind the figures.
You can fill it with a gravel board, a timber kickboard or soil and planting. We recommend a board where pets or children are an issue. We will talk through options on site.
A normal fence is not designed to retain soil, and soil pressure can push it over. Where a bank needs support, a proper retaining structure is the answer, with the fence set separately.
