Fencing for Ross-on-Wye's sloping, terraced gardens, including stepped panel runs, deep-set posts, repairs after storms and gates that hang properly on uneven ground above the Wye.
Ross-on-Wye sits on a sandstone bluff above the river, and very few gardens here are properly flat. Plots step down in terraces, fall away behind the house or run along a slope, and a fence has to cope with all of that without looking untidy or being pushed over by the ground behind it.
SPR Trees and Landscapes covers Ross-on-Wye for garden fence installation, boundary fencing and repairs. We look closely at levels before anything else. A free quotation follows, setting out how the fence will be stepped or raked, what the posts will be, and where gates will fit. We prefer to explain a slope problem before it becomes your problem.
On a slope there are two ways to build a fence. You can step the panels, so each section is level with a small drop to the next, or you can rake them to follow the ground. Stepping looks crisp and works well with standard panels. Raking suits closeboard built on site. We help you decide, and set posts deeper where the ground drops away behind them. Where soil is retained by a wall or bank, we avoid loading it, as pressure from above can push posts out of line over time.
Sloping gardens put extra strain on fences. Heavy rain can soften the bank behind a post, and wind then does the rest. We repair fallen fence panels, replace broken or leaning posts, and re-set fence runs that have shifted. When the same post keeps failing, the cause is usually ground, not wood, so we look at drainage and depth before replacing it. A broken boundary above a drop can be a real safety concern, so for those cases we can arrange quick repairs to make things secure.
Terraced gardens often need a fence at more than one level, so style matters. Slatted garden fencing allows some wind through and looks light on a raised terrace. Closeboard gives strength and privacy on a lower boundary. A gate on a slope needs care: the bottom rail must clear rising ground, and the hinges need to take the weight without sagging. We build or fit gates with that in mind, with a latch you can use comfortably, and a size to suit steps, wheelbarrows or bins.
We cover Ross-on-Wye and travel to Hereford, Ledbury and Gloucester for fencing jobs. The town stands on high ground above the river, with older streets close to the centre and gardens falling steeply in places. That affects access as well as design, so we ask about steps, side passages and parking when you get in touch. Some jobs involve carrying materials a fair distance, which we allow for in the quotation. Contact SPR for a free quote and honest advice on your slope.
We also take on garden fencing work in nearby Hereford, Ledbury, Gloucester.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
Stepped panels look neat and use standard sizes, with a small gap at the bottom of each drop. Raked fences follow the ground more closely but are usually built board by board. We will recommend one based on your slope.
Soil and water pressing from the high side push posts over time, especially if they are shallow. Deeper posts set in concrete, with drainage behind them, usually solve it. We will check the ground when we visit.
Yes. The gate can be hung so the bottom rail clears the rising ground, or fitted to open uphill in a different way. We choose the swing direction and hardware to suit your path.
