Lawn renovation and turfing in Stroud, where steep valley sides leave gardens sloping and stepped, and an honest view of what to renovate and what to rebuild saves money.
Stroud sits among steep valleys on the edge of the Cotswolds, and its gardens climb and fall with the land. A lawn may be a narrow shelf between two walls, a tilted rectangle behind a terraced house or a long bank above a road. Wet weather runs straight down these slopes, which can strip soil, leave moss in the hollows and turn the bottom edge soggy.
We renovate and re-turf lawns in Stroud and the neighbouring valleys. A key part of the job is deciding whether your lawn needs renovation, meaning raking, feeding, patching and overseeding, or complete replacement. We look at the slope, the soil and the condition of the grass at a free visit, and give you our honest recommendation along with a quote.
On a slope, the surface shape determines how the lawn behaves. We aim for smooth, even gradients without sudden steps, hollows or ridges, because these scalp under mowers and collect water. On shelves between walls, we can build a gently crowned surface that sheds rain both ways. Where soil has washed downhill, we top up with fresh topsoil and firm it in layers. Very steep faces may be better planted than turfed, and we will tell you if that is the case.
Not every tired lawn needs to go. If the grass is thin but the levels are sound, we can scarify out the thatch and moss, patch bare areas, overseed and feed, and bring it back over a season. When the surface is badly uneven, eroded or full of weeds, replacement is more honest. We then strip the old turf and lay new natural turf across the slope in staggered rows, using pegs on steeper ground until the roots take hold.
Water on a slope behaves differently: it runs off rather than soaking in, so we show you how to water slowly and in short bursts. Sun-facing banks dry quickly, while shaded valley bottoms stay wet and mossy. Repair work is common here, such as patching a worn path, refilling a washed out edge or reseeding a bare strip. Doing these small repairs promptly stops erosion spreading, and keeps your renovated lawn in good condition for longer.
Stroud is a Cotswold-edge town set among steep valleys, so many gardens are sloping and terraced, and we cover the town and the villages along the valley sides, as well as Gloucester and Cirencester. Access can be steep and narrow, so we plan how turf and soil will be moved and keep the work area safe. We visit for free, assess the slope and give you a clear written quote, along with our view on renovation versus replacement.
We also take on lawn turfing work in nearby Gloucester, Cirencester.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
Mowing safely is the limit. Slopes you can walk and push a mower across comfortably are fine, while very steep banks are better planted or covered in low-maintenance groundcover. We assess it on site.
Usually raking out thatch and moss, patching bare areas, overseeding, feeding and sometimes light levelling. It improves a lawn that is basically sound. It will not fix deep unevenness or drainage problems.
It can during the first weeks, before roots take hold. Good preparation, careful laying across the slope and sometimes pegging reduce the risk. We also advise on watering so water does not run straight off.
