Turf laying for Bewdley gardens, from narrow Georgian terrace plots near the Severn to stepped back gardens where every roll of turf has to be carried through the house or a passage.
Gardens in Bewdley rarely come as a neat rectangle. Many sit behind Georgian and Victorian terraces, stepping up from the house in short levels, with a gate or passage as the only way in. That shapes a turfing job more than the grass itself. Before we talk about lawn types, we look at how materials will get to the back, where the spoil will go and how much of the plot is really usable.
Our lawn turfing covers the whole job: stripping what is there, sorting the soil, levelling, laying and a plan for the first weeks. We work across Bewdley and the surrounding Worcestershire villages, and the free quote includes a walk round the garden so you can see what is realistic on a small, awkward site before you commit to anything.
Ground preparation is where a Bewdley lawn is won or lost. Old terrace gardens often hold decades of rubble, buried paths and compacted soil, with the odd slope towards the house that sends water the wrong way. We clear the surface, break up the compaction, remove stone and roots and rake the levels so the lawn drains away from walls. Where the existing soil is thin or exhausted, we bring in screened topsoil and firm it in layers rather than tipping it in one go. Small gardens mean barrows, not diggers, so the plan has to match the access.
Replacing an old lawn starts with removing it properly, whether that is a worn patch of moss and weeds or a full lawn that has been neglected behind a rented terrace. We strip the old turf, treat the base and lay fresh natural grass turf in staggered rows with tight joints, trimming neatly around steps, borders and the edges of paths. On a short, stepped garden we usually lay across the slope and cut turf to follow the steps. We can supply the turf and install it, or lay turf you have already arranged.
New turf needs water more than anything else for the first weeks, and a small walled garden can dry out quickly on a sunny day. We explain how often to water, when to stay off it and when the first cut is sensible. Gardens close to the river can stay damp through winter, so we also talk about drainage and what to expect in wet spells. If an older lawn only needs a tidy, patching and light renovation can be cheaper than starting again, and we will say honestly when that is the better route.
Bewdley is a Georgian riverside town on the Severn, with period terraces and terraced garden plots that make access the first question on most jobs. We cover the town itself and the neighbouring areas, including Kidderminster, Stourport-on-Severn and Tenbury Wells. Close to the river, the ground can hold water in wet months, so we look at levels and drainage before any turf goes down. We keep the work tidy in narrow streets and shared passages, and we can agree start times that suit neighbours and parking.
We also take on lawn turfing work in nearby Kidderminster, Stourport-on-Severn, Tenbury Wells.

Yes. Turf is rolled and can be carried through a house or passage, though it takes more labour. We check the route at the quote visit and plan how soil, turf and waste will move in and out so the job runs smoothly.
We almost always remove it. Laying over an old lawn leaves a poor base, trapped moss and uneven ground, and the new turf roots badly. Stripping the old grass lets us fix levels and soil properly first.
Light use is usually possible after a few weeks, once the turf has knitted into the soil and you can no longer lift a corner. Heavy play or pets are better kept off a little longer. It depends on the weather and watering.
