Lawn turfing in Malvern, where sloping hillside plots and Victorian villa gardens need terracing, drainage and soil preparation planned before the turf is laid.
Malvern climbs the side of the hills, and the gardens climb with it. Victorian villas stand in large plots that rise or fall away from the house, and smaller roads lower down have tighter lawns that still tend to tilt. A flat, easy-to-mow lawn is not always on offer.
Even so, a good lawn is possible in most Malvern gardens if the groundwork is right. SPR Trees and Landscapes supplies and lays natural turf, and we are used to dealing with slopes and varied soil. We talk first about what you want the garden to do, then work out how to get there sensibly.
On a slope, rain runs downhill and takes loose soil with it, so preparation needs more thought. Depending on the plot, we might smooth the gradient, create a gentle terrace or add a small retaining edge. The hills also give variable soils, with stony patches in some gardens and heavier ground in others. We remove the larger stones and bring in topsoil where it is thin. Steeper areas can be awkward to mow, so we sometimes suggest keeping those parts for planting instead of grass.
Large Victorian gardens often have lawns that have been neglected, with moss under old trees and bare patches where paths once ran. After lifting the old surface, we lay new turf on the prepared bed and pin or firm it on gradients so that it stays put. In family gardens, there is room for a tougher mix to cope with children and pets. For showpiece lawns, a finer type can be chosen. We trim cleanly to existing steps, walls and borders.
Sloping turf dries out faster at the top of a bank, and water can run off before it soaks in. We explain how to water slowly and check the dry spots. Mowing a slope needs care, and we advise on a safe method for your particular garden. For existing lawns, patching, renovation and aeration can recover worn areas, particularly where tree shade or foot traffic has caused thinning. If a bank is too steep to mow safely, alternatives are worth discussing.
We work throughout Malvern, including the hillside roads near Great Malvern, and also cover Upton upon Severn, Ledbury and Worcester. Steep drives and narrow lanes can make deliveries awkward, so let us know the easiest way to reach your garden. We will visit, look at the slope and soil, and give you a free quotation that makes clear what is involved.
We also take on lawn turfing work in nearby Upton upon Severn, Ledbury, Worcester.

On moderate slopes, yes, with careful preparation and firm laying. On very steep ground, turf may slip or be unsafe to mow, so we may suggest regrading or planting that area.
Properly prepared and firmly laid turf generally stays put, especially once roots grip the soil. Heavy rain soon after laying can be a risk on gradients, so timing and preparation matter.
Not always. If the base grass is sound, renovation and patching may be enough. If moss, weeds and bare ground dominate, a fresh start is usually the better route.
