Garden decking in Malvern, designed for steep hillside plots and Victorian villa gardens, with levelled platforms, safe steps and views made the most of.
Few places in the area have such varied ground as Malvern. The town climbs the hillside beneath the Malvern Hills, with Victorian villas on terraces, steep back gardens and wide views over the plain. Flat lawns are the exception.
That makes decking attractive, because a timber platform can create a level place to sit where none existed. It also means decks here are real structures. We design and build them for Malvern gardens with a careful eye on the slope, the soil and the safety of the steps.
On a hillside, the first question is how much of the slope you want to level. A single deck by the house, extending a little way out over the fall, may be all you need. Alternatively, two or three smaller decks can step down the garden, each with its own purpose: breakfast in the morning, a lounge area further down. The frame uses taller posts on the downhill side, braced properly, with the area beneath left open to air. We plan handrails and balustrades to protect without blocking the view, which is often the reason to build in the first place.
Slopes make drainage and stability the main concerns. Water runs downhill, and it can undermine footings or collect behind retaining walls, so we plan where it will go. Soil on hillsides can be thin, stony or shifting, and we test it before agreeing the support method. Steps are built with consistent rises and good treads, and we add lighting-ready positions if you want them. Victorian gardens often have old terrace walls, and we make sure the deck does not push against them. Where the structure is high, we discuss bracing and handrail details in person.
Decks on slopes are exposed to run-off and, on the shaded side of the hill, to persistent damp. Check the posts and bracing at least once a year, clear debris from beneath and treat the timber when it fades. Because a failure on a tall deck is more serious than on a low one, take warning signs seriously: movement, cracks in posts, rusted fixings or soft joists. We would rather advise a timely rebuild than see you patching a structure that is no longer reliable, and we will say clearly which category yours falls into.
We cover Malvern, including Great Malvern, and neighbouring places such as Upton upon Severn, Ledbury and Worcester. Many properties on the hillside are Victorian villas with sizeable but steep gardens, and access can mean steps, narrow drives or a long carry to the back. We plan for that, and for the slope itself, before giving any firm advice. If your home is in a protected area, check what is permitted before agreeing a design. A first visit is free, and we are glad to walk the garden with you.
We also take on garden decking work in nearby Upton upon Severn, Ledbury, Worcester.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
Often, yes, with taller posts, bracing and properly planned footings. Some slopes call for specialist input, and we will say so if yours does. We always inspect the ground in person first.
Guidance depends on the drop and the use, so we assess each garden. As a rule, anything with a significant fall needs protection, and we design it as part of the structure.
Not if it is planned well. We keep balustrades slim, consider glass or cable infill if you prefer and position the deck to open up the outlook rather than interrupt it.
