Bewdley gardens are often narrow, stepped and close to the river, so a deck here has to be planned around levels, drainage and the house behind it.
Walk the streets of this Georgian riverside town and you will see how many homes sit on long, slim plots that fall away towards the Severn. Those gardens can be lovely, but the ground is rarely flat, and a lawn that tilts is not much use for a table and chairs. A timber deck is often the simplest way to make usable level space.
We design and build garden decking across Bewdley and the villages around it. Each job begins with a visit, a look at the levels and the soil, and a conversation about how you actually use the garden. You get a free quotation and plain advice, including when a deck is the wrong answer for a particular plot.
Period terraces tend to come with small, enclosed gardens, so every metre counts. We usually start by working out where the sun falls and where the back door opens, then shape the deck to suit rather than dropping a rectangle in the middle. In a tight plot an L-shape or a deck hugging one boundary can leave room for planting. Softwood is the usual choice for value, while hardwood and composite boards suit people who want less upkeep. Balustrades, lighting and built-in seating can all be added, but we will tell you honestly if a plain, simple deck will serve you better and look more in keeping with an older house.
Where the garden drops towards the river or climbs up from the street, the frame matters more than the boards. We build on treated joists carried by solid footings, with the deck raised on the downhill side so it sits level. Ventilation underneath is important, and so is leaving a clear route for water, especially on lower plots that can stay wet after heavy rain. Steps need an even rise and a firm base, and any deck standing high above the ground will need a guard rail. We check where drainage runs before fixing a single post, so the structure stays sound.
Damp riverside air is hard on timber, and shaded decks grow green and slippery quickly. A yearly clean, a fresh coat of oil or stain where appropriate, and clearing leaves from the gaps will add a lot of life to the boards. The thing to watch is the frame, not the surface. If joists feel soft, screws pull out, or boards flex, patching the top will not help. We can look over an existing deck, replace worn boards where the frame is healthy, and recommend a full rebuild only when the structure has genuinely reached the end of its useful life.
Bewdley is a Georgian town on the Severn, with period terraces and plots that step down towards the water. Access can be awkward on narrow streets, so we plan deliveries and carrying routes before work starts, and we keep the site tidy for neighbours. We also cover Kidderminster, Stourport-on-Severn and Tenbury Wells, which means we are used to the mix of older riverside gardens and newer family plots in this part of Worcestershire. If you are not sure whether your garden suits a deck, ask for a free visit and we will give you a straight opinion.
We also take on garden decking work in nearby Kidderminster, Stourport-on-Severn, Tenbury Wells.

Usually yes. A raised frame on solid footings can create a level platform even where the ground falls away. The height decides whether you need a guard rail and how the steps are arranged, so we measure the levels first and talk through the options with you.
It depends on how high the deck sits above the ground, how much of the garden it covers and whether the property has any special status. Many low decks need nothing, but we suggest checking early, and we can explain what usually matters.
It can be, with a ventilated frame, good drainage and boards that suit damp conditions. Shaded or low-lying decks will need more regular cleaning. We will tell you honestly if composite boards might suit your plot better.
