Decking for Cheltenham gardens, from the long narrow plots behind Regency terraces to villa lawns and modern estate patios, designed to suit the house it sits beside.
Cheltenham is a town of period character, and its gardens reflect that. Behind a Regency terrace you may have a long, thin strip with a retaining wall on one side and neighbours close on both. Villa gardens can be generous but formal, while newer estates tend towards small square lawns and a builder's patio.
Because the settings differ so much, we do not offer a standard deck. We look at the house, the ground and how the household uses the garden, then propose a timber deck that suits all three. Visits and advice are free, and you can ask as many questions as you like.
A deck at the back of a period property should sit quietly alongside the brickwork or render rather than shout for attention. Muted stains, tidy board lines and slim, simple balustrades usually work better than ornate features. On a terrace garden we often think in terms of a single well-proportioned platform just outside the door, leaving room for planting beside it. Where the garden is long and thin, a second small deck further down can create a reason to walk through the space. For newer homes with a bare patio, decking can lift the whole area, and we can cover or replace the slabs depending on their condition.
Many town gardens here are a little above or below the ground floor of the house, and some drop in stages. A raised deck can solve a awkward step out of the back door, but once it stands higher than a few boards above the ground it needs proper handrails and well-planned stairs. We work out the finished height first, then build the frame backwards from it. Retaining walls, old cellar vents and drain covers all affect where posts can go, so we check what is under and beside the proposed footprint. Good airflow beneath the boards matters especially where space is tight.
A deck that has gone green and slippery often only needs cleaning and a fresh coat. Boards that are loose, cupped or split can be swapped one at a time. What cannot be fixed cheaply is a frame that has been sitting in damp soil with no air around it. Press a screwdriver into the joists near the ground, and if it sinks in easily, replacement is the sensible choice. We would rather tell you honestly that a deck has a season or two left than sell you a rebuild you do not need yet.
We cover Cheltenham and the villages and towns around it, including Bishop's Cleeve, Tewkesbury, Gloucester and Winchcombe. Because the town has such a wide range of housing, from Regency terraces and villas to newer estates, we tend to start every enquiry with a look at the property before talking about materials. Access is a real consideration on terraced streets, where timber may need to be carried through the house or along a shared path, and we plan deliveries and waste removal around that. A quick message describing your garden is a good way to begin.
We also take on garden decking work in nearby Bishop's Cleeve, Tewkesbury, Gloucester, Winchcombe.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
Sometimes. If the patio is sound and level enough, a frame can sit on top, but height and drainage need thought. If the slabs have sunk or hold water, lifting them first usually gives a better result.
We carry materials through or round the property and cut boards to length on site where needed. We agree the route with you beforehand and protect floors and paths along the way.
It can be, provided there is airflow underneath and the boards are kept clear of moss and leaves. Shade slows drying, so regular brushing matters more than it would in a sunny spot.
