Decking for Ledbury gardens, from small plots behind timber-framed buildings to sloping lawns on the edge of the Malvern Hills, with frames made to follow the ground.
Ledbury is a small market town with a distinctly Herefordshire character, where black-and-white timber-framed buildings sit close to the street and the gardens behind can be surprisingly tucked away. On the edge of the town, the land begins to rise towards the Malvern Hills.
That gives us a mixture of small sheltered yards and longer sloping gardens with views. Both can suit timber decking, but they call for different thinking. We build and repair decks in Ledbury and the nearby countryside, and we will always start by walking the garden with you.
Timber suits Ledbury well, since so many of its buildings are themselves timber-framed. In a small walled yard a deck can create a bright, level sitting area that dries faster than a lawn, and it works well with pots, climbers and a small bench. We think carefully about how it meets the house, since older doorways may sit at awkward heights and old floors may not match the ground outside. A neat threshold, a clear step and a surface that drains away from the wall all matter. Sympathetic colours and a plain balustrade help the deck look as if it belongs.
Gardens nearer the hills often fall away steeply. Rather than cutting into the bank, a deck can step out over it, with the frame supported on posts at varying heights. This gives a level space and a view, and the area underneath stays open for airflow. Because a taller deck brings real fall risks, we design the steps and handrails as part of the structure rather than as add-ons. We also look at drainage: water running down a slope can undermine footings, so we plan how it passes the frame. Sometimes terracing the deck in two levels is neater than one tall platform.
Hillside gardens catch rain, and shaded yards stay damp, so moss and algae are the usual problems here. Brush the boards regularly, keep the ends of the joists clear of soil and plants, and re-oil or stain when the surface starts to look dry. If you notice springy boards, posts that wobble or fixings that have rusted through, have the frame looked at. Replacing boards on a sound frame is a modest job. Replacing a rotten frame is a bigger one, but delaying it may mean paying for both eventually, so we would rather you knew the position early.
We work in Ledbury and the surrounding area, including Malvern, Bromyard, Hereford and Upton upon Severn. Many gardens here are on the edge of town, where the land climbs and the soil may be stony, and some sit within sight of the hills. Lanes can be narrow, and a number of properties have steps rather than level access, which affects how we bring in timber and take away waste. We discuss all of that at the first visit. If your home is old or in a protected area, check the rules on any new garden structure before you commit to a design.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
Often yes. The frame is built on posts at different heights so the top stays level. Steps, handrails and drainage are planned together, and we check the slope in person before suggesting a design.
It usually does, if kept simple and tidy. We pay attention to how the deck meets the wall, keeping air gaps and drainage clear so moisture is not pushed towards the building.
It depends on exposure. Sunny, open decks dry out and need a fresh coat sooner, while shaded ones need more cleaning. Look at the surface each spring and act when water stops beading.
