From Victorian terrace backs to larger post-war suburban plots, Hereford gardens suit different decks, and the right design depends on the house, the soil and the family.
Hereford is a cathedral city on the River Wye, and its housing is a patchwork. Close to the centre there are Victorian terraces with long thin gardens, while the suburbs bring semis from the post-war era with wider lawns. A deck suits both, but the shape, height and materials should be quite different.
We build timber decks for homeowners across Hereford and the surrounding villages. A typical job begins with a visit to measure up and discuss how the space is used. You will get a free written quotation and straight advice, including whether the garden is better with a deck, a patio or a mixture of the two.
In a long terrace garden, a deck close to the house provides a dry surface for dining, leaving the rest of the plot for lawn or vegetables. In a wider suburban garden, there is more freedom, so the deck might sit in a sunny corner away from the house as a retreat. We discuss orientation, privacy and overlooking from neighbours, then choose board widths, colours and edging to suit. Softwood is popular for good value, hardwood for a richer finish, and composite for easy care. Lighting, planters and seating can be built in so the deck feels finished from day one.
Plenty of Hereford gardens look flat but fall gently away from the house, and some have been raised or lowered by previous owners. We use a level to find the true picture, then set the frame on solid footings so the deck sits flat and stable. Joists are spaced to suit the boards and the expected load, and the structure is kept above wet ground with room for air to move. Where there is a drop, steps are added at a comfortable rise, with handrails where required. If drainage is poor, we tackle that first so the deck does not stay damp.
Treat decking as you would a fence or a shed: it needs a bit of attention to last. Brush off leaves, scrub away green growth, and re-apply a protective finish when water stops beading on the boards. Check the screws and the frame at least once a year. A deck where boards are cupped or splintered but the structure is sound can often be refreshed by replacing the worst sections. A deck with rotten joists, sagging spans or a frame that sits in standing water is a different story, and we will be frank about when a rebuild is the wiser spend.
Hereford is a cathedral city on the River Wye with Victorian streets in the middle and post-war and newer suburbs spreading outwards. We cover the city itself and travel regularly to Leominster, Ross-on-Wye, Ledbury and Bromyard, so we get to know the soil, the access and the typical plot shapes across the county. Tell us whether yours is a narrow terrace or a spacious suburban plot and we can suggest a sensible starting point. A free visit costs nothing and leaves you with clear advice either way.
We also take on garden decking work in nearby Leominster, Ross-on-Wye, Ledbury, Bromyard.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
As a rough guide, you want room for the table, chairs pulled back and a clear path around them. We usually mark the outline on the ground during the visit so you can picture it before agreeing a design.
Yes, once the turf is cleared and the ground is prepared with a membrane and firm footings. The lawn beneath will not survive, so we plan the layout to keep the remaining grass worthwhile.
We can take down and dispose of a tired deck as part of the job, and check what is underneath. Sometimes the old frame is reusable, but often a fresh start is simpler and more reliable.
