Garden decking in Ludlow, designed with period properties in mind and adapted to gardens that range from small walled courtyards to long plots with changes of level.
Ludlow is a historic town, with a castle above the river and a great many period properties below it. Gardens vary a good deal in size, and some are tucked behind older buildings with little room to move.
Decking is a practical answer to several common problems here: uneven ground, patchy old paving, and a back door that opens onto an awkward step. We design and build timber decks in Ludlow with that history in mind, aiming for a result that looks calm beside the house and works for everyday use.
A period house deserves a deck that does not compete with it. We lean towards simple board patterns, restrained finishes and slim handrails, and we think about how the deck is seen from windows as well as from the garden. In a small courtyard, a single platform that covers uneven paving can transform the space. In a longer garden, a deck can be pulled away from the house to create a destination, linked by a stepping path. We can also include planters, bench seating or a pergola frame, though we suggest you decide on the extras before the main structure is built.
Older gardens rarely have flat ground. You might meet old walls, buried foundations, tree roots and abrupt changes in level. These shape how the frame is supported, so we investigate before quoting firmly. A deck can bridge a change in level with a taller side and a lower side, and steps connect them. We pay attention to riser heights and tread depths so the stairs feel natural, and add handrails where needed. Drainage deserves thought too, as water running off buildings and walls can collect under a deck if the base is not graded properly.
Walls and trees make shade, and shade holds moisture. Clear leaves promptly, scrub any green growth and make sure planters do not leak onto the boards. Re-stain or oil the timber when it has faded, and check the substructure regularly. When boards are failing across the whole deck, ask whether the joists are still firm. If they are, a re-board is a reasonable approach. If they are not, we would advise rebuilding the frame, and it can be a good moment to rethink the shape or height of the deck at the same time.
We work in Ludlow and the countryside around it, including Tenbury Wells and Leominster. As a historic town it has narrow streets and tight access in places, and some properties sit in conservation areas or are listed, which can affect what is allowed in a garden. We would encourage you to check any rules before settling on a design, and we are happy to describe the structure in clear terms to help with that. A first visit lets us see the access, the ground and the style of the house before we put a plan on paper.
We also take on garden decking work in nearby Tenbury Wells, Leominster.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
Sometimes, if the paving is stable. We build a frame that levels across the uneven surface, but we check drainage and height first. If slabs are loose or sunk, lifting them gives a better base.
They can. Rules vary with the property and how the deck is built, so check with the local authority first. We can provide a clear description of the structure to help you do that.
Yes. Built-in benches and planter boxes are common additions. It is easier to plan them at the start so the frame can carry them and the layout leaves enough room.
