Steep valleys define Stroud, and gardens here climb, drop and step in all directions, so building a safe, level deck takes careful planning and a properly braced frame.
Houses cling to the hillsides around this Cotswold-edge town, and many gardens are terraced, or simply tilt sharply away from the back door. For homeowners, that can make outdoor space feel awkward. A deck can solve this by creating a flat platform where none exists, often with a lovely view.
We design and build timber decks in Stroud and the surrounding valleys. Because slopes bring extra risks, we spend time on site checking levels, soil and drainage before quoting. The quotation is free, and we will tell you if the gradient calls for retaining work or a more modest approach than you first imagined.
On a steep plot, the question is where flat space is worth creating. Often the ideal spot is just outside the house, extending the floor level out over the slope. Alternatively, a lower platform further down the garden can feel like a private retreat. We think about views, privacy and how people will get to the deck safely. Stained softwood suits most budgets, while hardwood and composite stand up well to exposure. A balustrade is normally needed on raised decks, and we aim to keep it light so it does not obstruct the outlook.
This is the heart of decking in a valley town. The deeper the drop, the longer the posts, and the more bracing is needed to prevent movement. Footings must reach stable ground, not loose topsoil that can creep downhill. Joist sizes and spans are chosen to carry the load, and diagonal bracing keeps the structure rigid. Steps are built to a consistent rise, with firm landings and handrails. We also plan for water, since runoff on a slope can undermine footings. If we see signs of ground movement or weak walls, we will say so before going further.
Raised decks carry more risk when they age, so regular checks are important. Look at posts at ground level, brace connections, and the underside of the joists for damp. Boards can be replaced as they wear. If you notice sway, rust at the connections or soft timber, do not wait. A deck that has lost its structural strength should be rebuilt rather than patched, particularly if it stands well above the ground. We are happy to inspect any existing deck, explain what we find and quote for repair or replacement.
Stroud is a Cotswold-edge town set among steep valleys, so we regularly see terraced and sloping plots, narrow lanes and gardens reached only by steps. We plan how to carry materials in, protect what is already growing and keep the working area safe. Our work also takes us to Gloucester and Cirencester, so this is familiar territory. If you are wondering whether your slope is suitable for a deck, ask for a free visit and we will give you a straightforward opinion.
We also take on garden decking work in nearby Gloucester, Cirencester.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
Rarely. Steep gardens often benefit most, but the structure will be more involved. We assess the gradient and ground on site, then explain what is practical and what it means for the design.
Sometimes, if the soil is unstable or the deck needs to cut into the slope. We will tell you if we think one is required, and what it would involve before you decide.
By hand, in manageable lengths, along the easiest available route. We plan this at the visit and take care of paths, planting and neighbours while we work.
