Old lawn removal and new turf in Cirencester, for stone-built period streets with long-established gardens and newer estates where the first lawn was never properly made.
Cirencester is a Cotswold market town in stone, and its gardens fall into two broad groups. Around the older streets, lawns have been there for decades, often threaded with moss, roots and the remains of earlier garden schemes. On the newer estates, the lawn may be only a few years old and already failing because it was laid on poor ground. In both cases, taking the old surface away is the starting point.
We remove tired lawns and lay new natural turf across Cirencester and the surrounding villages. The work includes stripping and disposing of the old grass, sorting out the soil and levels, and laying fresh turf to a clean finish. A free visit lets us see what is under your lawn and work out a sensible, honestly priced plan.
Taking off an old lawn properly is a job for either a turf cutter or careful hand work, depending on access. We lift the grass and roots, remove it from site and clear stones, weeds and debris. In older gardens, we watch for buried services, roots from mature trees and fragments of old paths or walls. Once the surface is clear, we can see the true state of the ground, and we agree with you whether it needs light improvement or substantial rework before turf goes on.
Cotswold brash soil is often shallow, so we add topsoil to build depth, mixing it into the top layer to avoid a hard divide. Levels are checked against house walls, patios and boundaries, with a gentle fall for drainage. Then natural turf is laid in staggered rows, trimmed neatly around beds and trees. On newer estates, where builders' waste is common, we spend extra time removing it. The aim is the same everywhere: a firm, even base and tight joints.
Once the new turf is down, regular watering is the single most important job. We explain how much to give and how to check that it reaches the soil beneath. We also advise on the first cut, when to walk on it and how to feed it later. If a section of your lawn is damaged by building work, play or pets, we can cut out the bad area and patch it with fresh turf, so a small problem does not force a complete replacement.
Cirencester is a Cotswold market town in stone with period streets and newer estates, and we cover the town and nearby places including Northleach and Stroud. Older central gardens may have limited access, so we plan the removal of waste as carefully as the delivery of turf, while estate plots are often simpler. We give free quotations after a visit, and we are happy to talk through each step so you know exactly what you are paying for.
We also take on lawn turfing work in nearby Northleach, Stroud.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
We take it away and dispose of it as part of the job, so you are not left with a heap in the garden. The quote makes clear that waste removal is included.
That tends to leave a lumpy base with buried grass that rots and settles unevenly. Stripping the old turf and levelling the ground gives a more reliable result for the new lawn.
Yes. Newer gardens often have compacted soil and builders' waste under thin topsoil, so we focus on loosening the ground and adding good topsoil before laying turf. It makes a big difference to how long the lawn lasts.
