Northleach is a quiet Cotswold wool town, and gardens there suit calm, well-made layouts in natural stone tones that stay tidy with only a modest amount of regular care.
Northleach is a small town built largely in stone, with a long main street and plots running back behind it. Gardens here tend to be quiet, walled and often a little hidden. People tell us they want somewhere to sit and a bit of greenery, rather than a project that takes over the weekend. Walled gardens often hold heat, which suits sun-loving, drought-tolerant plants.
That fits our way of working. We look at what you have, suggest a simple scheme and build it carefully, so it settles into the setting. A patio, a few well-chosen borders and one or two good pots can be enough. We can also revisit an older garden that has become overgrown or awkward. Thin soil over limestone is common, so we test before choosing planting.
Stone towns reward restraint. A single, generous patio made of natural-look paving, edged by borders of repeated planting, usually looks better than lots of separate features. Keep lines straight where they follow walls and buildings, and use gentle curves only where the space allows. A path should lead somewhere: to a seat, a shed, a gate. Leave open space as well, because empty paving is easy to keep clean. We talk about all of this during the first visit and sketch the options for you. Quiet, simple schemes tend to age better in a town like this.
A well-laid patio is the heart of a low maintenance garden. It should sit on a firm base with a slight fall away from the house, so that rain runs off. Gravel is useful for borders, informal paths and spaces under trees, always with edging and membrane. We would use artificial grass only where it will not be on show to the street. For plants, lime-tolerant and drought-friendly choices, such as lavender, catmint, grasses and sedum, give flowers for months and need just an annual cut-back. Mulch seals the bed.
Maintenance is mostly seasonal. In early spring, cut back grasses and perennials, and top up mulch. Through summer, water pots and newly planted areas and brush down the patio. In autumn, clear leaves from paving and gravel before they stain. In winter, keep an eye out for algae on steps and slippery slabs. Walls, gates and steps deserve a quick check once a year. That routine takes a modest amount of time, and it keeps the garden looking settled without constant attention. Old steps and gateposts can be kept and worked into the new layout.
Northleach is a small Cotswold wool town in stone, and many of its gardens sit behind period frontages with limited access. We plan how materials and waste move before we start, and tidy the site each day. The ground can be thin and stony in places, so we prepare bases carefully before laying any surface. We also work around Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold and Cirencester. For friendly advice or a free quote on your garden, contact us and we will arrange a visit. We can usually judge access and priorities within a single visit.
We also take on low maintenance gardens work in nearby Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, Cirencester.

Porcelain and good-quality natural-look paving are both very easy to keep. Both can be swept and washed, and neither needs sealing or staining like timber. The base and drainage matter more than the surface, so we concentrate on getting those right.
Yes. Many drought-tolerant plants prefer thin, free-draining soil and thrive in it. We choose planting to suit the conditions and improve the soil where it helps, using mulch to hold moisture and keep weeds down. We are happy to talk it over.
Yes. Some people just want an opinion on options before committing. We are happy to visit, talk it through and explain what is involved, and there is no obligation to go ahead with the work. Ask us about the options.
