Most of Studley's homes are twentieth-century family houses with front lawns, back lawns and a lot of grass, so a lighter-touch garden can free up a good deal of time.
Studley is a large Warwickshire village close to Redditch, and its streets are mostly built up with semis, detached houses and bungalows from the last century. Typical gardens are a rectangle of lawn with a path, a shed and a border or two along the fence. They are functional, and they need regular work to stay that way. Children and pets are worth mentioning, as they affect which surfaces suit you.
That regular work is what we aim to cut. A well-planned back garden can keep a small lawn for children or pets, add a proper patio, and tidy the borders so that a short visit each month keeps everything neat. The front garden can be made easier too, while still giving the house some kerb appeal. Many local gardens share a similar footprint, so we adapt rather than copy ideas.
On a standard suburban plot, the layout can be changed without much upheaval. A patio next to the house gives a dry, firm spot for the table, with a path continuing to the rest of the garden. Borders can be reshaped into smooth curves or clean lines that are easy to mow around, or filled in and replaced by a larger paved or gravel area. Sheds, bins and washing lines can be tucked into a screened corner. We talk through how you use the garden day to day before drawing anything up.
Paving gives the strongest result for the main seating area, and porcelain is a popular choice because it cleans easily. Gravel suits front gardens, side passages and borders, laid over membrane and edged firmly. Artificial grass is an option for small, worn or shaded lawns, where children and pets use the space heavily, if the base is prepared well. Planting can be simple: a few repeated shrubs, grasses and perennials, with mulch to suppress weeds. Combining a smaller lawn with hard surfaces often gives a good compromise between looks and effort.
The ongoing tasks are modest. Sweep the patio and wash it when it greens up, rake the gravel and pull seedlings as you notice them, and trim shrubs once or twice a year. Artificial grass needs brushing and occasional leaf clearing, particularly under trees. Remaining lawn gets a quicker mow because the edges are firm and the shape is simple. Compared with a traditional garden of lawn and bedding, the weekly time falls considerably, which is usually what people hope for when they ask us. We can also look at the front garden and drive in the same visit.

Absolutely. A smaller lawn with firm edges and a simple shape takes far less time to mow and trim. Many people keep a patch of grass for children or pets and replace the rest with a patio, gravel or planted borders.
It can cut maintenance considerably, and it can provide parking space. To look good, it needs a proper base, edging and membrane, plus some planting for softness. A bare gravel rectangle looks dull, so we usually add shrubs, a path or a feature.
Paving is generally lower maintenance, because timber decking needs periodic cleaning and treatment and can become slippery. Composite boards reduce that, but paving or porcelain is usually the hardest wearing and simplest to look after for most households. Just ask us.
