Hedge cutting, shaping and reduction for Malvern gardens, from steep hillside borders to the long boundary hedges that wrap around Great Malvern's Victorian villas and tall boundary planting.
Walk up almost any road beneath the Malvern Hills and you will notice how many gardens sit on a slope. That changes hedge work more than people expect. A boundary that looks a simple job from the pavement can be a different proposition when the cutter has to stand on a bank, and the clippings have to be carried back down.
We cover Malvern and the villages around it for regular hedge cutting, shaping and one-off reduction of hedges that have got ahead of their owners. Whether yours is a tidy privet at the front of a villa or a mixed boundary that has not been touched for a few seasons, we will look at it properly before suggesting a plan.
On a hillside garden, the ground level changes along the length of the hedge, so the top line has to be judged by eye as well as by string. A hedge cut level with the slope can look odd from the road below, while one cut level in the horizontal can leave one end far too tall. We usually walk the whole boundary first, then decide where the line should sit. Formal hedges such as box, yew and privet need cutting little and often to keep a crisp face, whereas informal mixed hedges of hawthorn, hazel and field maple suit trimming once a year, outside the nesting season, so they stay thick at the base.
Many older Malvern gardens carry a conifer screen that was planted for privacy and has since grown into a wall. Leylandii and similar conifers cannot be cut back into bare brown wood, because they will not reshoot from it. The honest answer is sometimes a staged reduction down to the last green growth, sometimes a slightly lower and narrower hedge than you hoped for, and occasionally removal and replanting. Deciduous hedges such as hawthorn or beech are more forgiving and can be cut hard in winter. We will tell you which category your hedge falls into before any cutting starts.
Where a hedge sits on a boundary with a neighbour, it helps to have a quick word before work begins, especially on the narrow lanes where access is shared. We can cut from your side and take the top and face as far as we can safely reach. Tall hedges beside a drive or a road may need a little traffic management, and steep ground can mean using a platform or ladder with a second person footing it. All cuttings are bagged or chipped and taken away unless you want them for the compost heap or a woodburner.
Malvern is a hillside spa town, and Great Malvern in particular is full of Victorian villas on generous, sloping plots with long hedged boundaries. Those hedges tend to be tall, old and sometimes patchy at the bottom, so the question is often how much can sensibly be taken off. We work throughout the town and the surrounding area, and also cover Upton upon Severn, Ledbury and Worcester, so if your property sits somewhere between those places, it is worth asking. Access can be steep and narrow, so tell us about parking and gates when you get in touch.
We also take on hedge maintenance work in nearby Upton upon Severn, Ledbury, Worcester.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
For most hedges, late summer is a good time for the main trim, and winter suits hard cutting of deciduous types. Between March and August birds may be nesting, so we check carefully and delay anything that would disturb an active nest.
Usually, yes. We assess the ground first and choose between hand tools, long-reach cutters and a platform. If the slope is too risky for safe working, we will say so and suggest an alternative such as lowering it in stages.
Yes, as standard. We clear the base of the hedge, sweep paths and drives, and remove the waste. If you would like the chippings left for mulching beds, just mention it when we visit. If you would rather keep some of it for your own garden, tell us at the visit and we will set it aside for you.
