Hedge cutting, shaping and cut-backs for Shipston-on-Stour, covering town-centre gardens, plots near the river and the larger boundary hedges on the edge of the Cotswolds.
Shipston-on-Stour is a small market town beside the river, close to the Cotswold edge. The hedges you see around it are a good blend: clipped front hedges on the main streets, mixed native boundaries toward the countryside, and the occasional tall conifer screen from a more recent era. That variety means no two jobs here are quite alike, so we start by walking the boundary with you and agreeing priorities.
Whichever you have, we can look after it. Our hedge maintenance in Shipston-on-Stour covers regular trimming, overdue cut-backs and the removal of oversized conifers when that is the right answer. We talk through the options before starting, and we keep to what we agreed so there are no unpleasant surprises when you see the result. All of it is explained in plain English.
A good hedge is cut at the right time of year for its species. In Shipston-on-Stour that usually means late summer for beech, hornbeam, hawthorn and the countryside mixes, spring and summer repeat cuts for privet and Lonicera, and a single early-autumn clip for yew. We keep the sides tapered so the lower branches get light. Hedges on plots near the river can grow with extra vigour because the ground is moist, so they may need cutting a little sooner than the same hedge in a drier garden. Each plant has its time.
When a conifer hedge has grown past reach, there are three possible outcomes: reduce it in stages, top it and trim the sides, or remove it. Which one applies depends on whether the hedge still has green growth low down and whether the root plate is stable. We aim to save a hedge where we sensibly can, but we will not cut a Leylandii into brown wood simply to satisfy a request. Native hedges that have become leggy can be coppiced or laid, and they usually return thick and healthy within a couple of seasons.
A tall hedge on the edge of a lane or beside a neighbouring garden can cut out light and make a space feel closed in. Reductions can be phased so the change is not abrupt, and a short chat with neighbours before work starts goes a long way. We remove all cuttings or chip them into a pile for you, and we rake up the base of the hedge, which otherwise collects leaves and litter. Hedges near water are checked before cutting so nothing falls in and wildlife is not disturbed.
Shipston-on-Stour is a small Warwickshire market town on the River Stour near the edge of the Cotswolds. The surrounding area mixes tidy town gardens with larger rural properties, and we are used to both. We work in Shipston-on-Stour and nearby villages, and also in Stratford-upon-Avon, Moreton-in-Marsh and Chipping Campden. Some plots are low-lying and can be soft underfoot after wet weather, so we may suggest a drier spell for heavier machinery. Tell us about your site and we will plan around it. We are glad to visit and talk it through.
We also take on hedge maintenance work in nearby Stratford-upon-Avon, Moreton-in-Marsh, Chipping Campden.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
Yes, with care to keep material out of the water and to check for nesting birds first. We will also tell you if the bank is too soft for heavy kit. If the ground is soft, we also advise on stepping stones or boards to protect the bank and lawn.
It means cutting a native hedge hard, close to the base, so it regrows with fresh stems. It suits hawthorn, hazel and field maple, and is usually done in winter. It is a good way to renew an old or gappy hedge without replanting, and wildlife benefits from the fresh, dense growth.
That depends on the season and our diary. Spring and late summer are busy, so it helps to ask early. We will give you a realistic idea when we visit to look at the hedge. Please ring early in spring, as that is a busy time.
