Hedge trimming, reshaping and reduction in Alcester, a Roman-origin market town where old streets, courtyards and long walled gardens each bring their own hedge challenges.
Alcester has been a settlement for a very long time, and it shows in the layout. Behind the timber-framed frontages and old brick walls you find narrow plots, long back gardens and the occasional courtyard, with hedges squeezed into every spare edge. Narrow access and shared walls are a normal part of the work, and we plan each visit with those limits in mind from the very start.
We offer hedge cutting, shaping and cut-backs in Alcester that respect that tight, historic setting. Rather than arriving with one standard approach, we look at the hedge species, the access and the neighbours, and then propose a method that suits. Where a hedge has outgrown its position, we will tell you what is realistic. We keep the conversation simple and avoid jargon.
In an older town, a hedge is often the only thing between a garden and a public footpath or lane, so a tidy outline is appreciated. We trim yew, box, privet and hornbeam to a flat top with straight sides, and mixed hedges to a rounder profile that looks natural and sheds rain. Cutting timing matters as well: we avoid the main nesting weeks, and we prefer dry conditions so the cut surface heals clean. With long narrow gardens, it can be helpful to cut in sections over a single day and clear up as we go. Sharp tools and dry weather help.
Plenty of Alcester gardens have a conifer hedge from the last century that has grown beyond the width of its bed. Cutting into the old, leafless centre of a Leylandii seldom works, so we find the edge of the green and reduce to that. It may leave a hedge a little slimmer than you wanted, but it stays alive. For tall deciduous hedges, such as old beech or hawthorn, a firm winter cut reduces height without threatening the plant. We will agree the target size with you at the start so there are no surprises. We keep you informed throughout.
With old walls and close boundaries, hedges often cling to or lean over masonry, and the damage is easy to overlook. We watch for this and tell you if we see roots, ivy or branches pushing against brickwork. We always recommend a word with the neighbour before cutting a shared hedge. Waste is chipped or bagged and taken through the safest route, with floor protection if it has to pass through the house. We finish by sweeping paths and clearing gutters if the hedge has deposited leaves or clippings there.
Alcester is a Roman-origin Warwickshire market town with timber-framed buildings, so many properties are old, and their hedges are often old as well. We work in the town and the villages and farms around it, and we also cover Redditch, Studley and Stratford-upon-Avon. Access is sometimes through narrow passages or shared yards, so please mention this when you contact us. We would also like to hear whether the hedge is on a boundary and who maintains the far side, which helps us plan the visit sensibly. Please mention it.
We also take on hedge maintenance work in nearby Redditch, Studley, Stratford-upon-Avon.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
Yes, with care. We use hand tools near the masonry and tell you if roots or growth appear to be harming the wall. Removal of ivy or heavy growth may be a separate step. That kind of damage is easy to miss, so we look closely and report what we see before we continue with the cutting. Talk to us first.
That depends on your space, but the key is to cut before it outgrows its live growth. Once it needs cutting into bare wood, there is nothing to regrow from. A little room around the wall also makes later maintenance easier. Please ask if unsure.
Only if there is no side or rear route. If so, we use dust sheets and take waste out carefully. We will discuss it with you ahead of the visit. We will talk through the route beforehand. We update you as each stage is completed.
