Hedge cutting, trimming and careful reduction for Bourton-on-the-Water, where compact cottage gardens, stone walls and lots of passing visitors put a premium on tidy results.
Bourton-on-the-Water is one of the busiest villages in the Cotswolds, and the front gardens along its streets are seen by a lot of people. A neat hedge in front of a stone cottage looks right; a shaggy one makes the whole frontage feel neglected. A hedge in a compact garden has to look right at close range, and that is how we judge every cut we make for you.
Our hedge cutting in Bourton-on-the-Water is aimed at keeping gardens smart without damaging the plants or the stone behind them. We work with hand tools where space is tight, collect every clipping, and keep disruption to the street to a minimum. If your hedge needs more than a trim, we will explain exactly what a cut-back involves. Nothing is rushed.
Small hedges demand precision. We cut yew, box, privet and beech with shears or fine trimmers, checking the line from the road as well as the garden. Because the plots are compact, a single shoot left sticking out is obvious. We keep the sides gently tapered and take the top off level, then pick the cuttings out of the hedge itself, not just the ground. Where hedges run alongside a footpath, we protect passing walkers with signs, and we work early in the day when we can to avoid the busiest hours for visitors.
In a compact garden, even a modest conifer can dominate. A row that was planted as a quick screen may now be taller than the cottage chimney line and shut out most of the sun. We can often reduce height and width in stages, always cutting back to living foliage, but we are open when the better option is removal. Replacement with a lower hedge of beech, hornbeam or yew gives privacy with far less upkeep. Hard cutting of laurel and other broadleaf hedges is generally fine in winter. We are happy to advise.
Cottage gardens share walls and hedges with their neighbours more than most. We suggest talking to next door before work, and we can trim both sides if both owners agree. We keep gates and paths free for residents, move any plant pots out of our way and put them back, and clean up thoroughly with brushes and a blower where suitable. Waste is taken away the same day. If parking is limited, we will tell you in advance how we plan to unload so we do not block the lane.
Bourton-on-the-Water is a popular Cotswold village on the River Windrush, with stone cottages and compact gardens, which means careful access and tidy working are essential. We cover the village and neighbouring areas, as well as Stow-on-the-Wold, Northleach and Moreton-in-Marsh. In the busy season, streets get crowded, so we try to book visits for quieter times of day. Mention any parking restrictions, shared drives or low walls when you get in touch and we will plan accordingly. We are used to working in tight and busy streets, and we keep visits short and tidy for residents and neighbours alike, with thought for passers-by.
We also take on hedge maintenance work in nearby Stow-on-the-Wold, Northleach, Moreton-in-Marsh.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
We certainly try to. We use hand tools where practical, avoid early noise where we can, and clear everything away before we leave so the street looks tidy. Clearing up takes as much care as cutting, so we sweep paths, check doorways and lift loose pieces from planting beds.
Box, yew and hornbeam are popular because they take close clipping well and stay compact. Privet is quicker growing and needs more frequent trims. Whatever you choose, planting in autumn or early spring helps the new hedge settle in, and a small bare-root plant often catches up with a larger one.
Sometimes, if it has live growth low down and is not shading the house. If it has become a nuisance, replacing it with a smaller native hedge can be easier to live with. We can talk through the choice with you on site.
