Hedge maintenance in Cirencester covering period stone streets and newer estates alike, with trimming, shaping and reduction suited to each kind of garden for both.
Cirencester is a Cotswold market town with a strong sense of place. The old centre is built in stone, with walled gardens and long hedges behind period houses, and around it are newer estates where plots are smaller and hedges are more modest. Stone walls and old brick call for careful handling, while open estate boundaries are quicker to cut but need steady regular attention to stay in order.
We look after both. For stone-built streets we aim for crisp, careful work that suits the surroundings, and for newer estates we focus on keeping fast-growing hedges in check at sensible intervals. Reductions of overgrown hedges are explained in advance so you know the likely outcome before we begin. We aim to leave your garden looking tidy and your hedge in good health.
Period gardens often have clipped yew, box or hornbeam, which reward patient work. We cut with shears or fine trimmers, aiming for straight faces and a level top, and mark the line with string on longer runs. Informal hedges, mixing hawthorn, hazel, holly and field maple, suit a softer approach: one annual cut in late summer or winter, shaped to a slight round. Newer estate hedges, usually privet or Lonicera, need several light visits. We recommend the pattern to match the plant and your budget. Timing matters too. We stay in touch from the first call to the final sweep.
Larger gardens in and around the town sometimes carry tall conifer hedges that have been left for years. They can shade lawns, drop heavy debris and make a garden feel enclosed. Reduction in stages is possible if living foliage remains, but Leylandii that has been left too long will not regrow from bare wood, and we will tell you if that applies. Holly, yew and most broadleaf hedges are more forgiving and can be cut hard. We discuss your priorities, whether that is light, privacy or low upkeep, before settling on the approach. We are happy to talk it through on site. We keep to what we agree.
A hedge on a boundary is a shared feature, so agree arrangements with neighbours before work starts, especially when a big reduction will change what they see. We are happy to explain the plan in plain terms. Larger gardens produce a good deal of waste, which we chip or remove in the vehicle. We rake the hedge base, sweep stone paving and gravel, and leave the lawn free of twigs. If walls, gateposts or garden furniture are close to the hedge, we cover or move them first. We also give advice on upkeep.
Cirencester is a Cotswold market town in stone, with period streets in the middle and newer estates on its edges. That mix means we meet everything from walled courtyards to long open boundaries. We cover the town and the villages around it, as well as Northleach and Stroud. Some old streets are narrow and parking is limited, so let us know in advance. A few words about the hedge type, its length and what lies on the far side will help us plan the visit and give a realistic estimate.
We also take on hedge maintenance work in nearby Northleach, Stroud.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
Yew is usually clipped once a year, in late summer or early autumn. It recovers well from firm cutting, even into old wood, which most conifers do not. Good clipping at the right time of year keeps the hedge dense and green, and avoids the bare, brown inner wood that develops if it is left.
Yes, using hand tools where needed so the wall is not damaged. We also watch for roots or stems pushing against the stone and tell you if we see any. Stones can shift if a hedge grows tight against them, and cutting early prevents damage.
Yes, as standard. For larger jobs we chip on site where that helps, and remove the rest. If you would like chip for borders, say so when you book. For loads of any size we use a trailer or a van, depending on access.
