Practical hedge cutting, trimming and cut-back work in Tenbury Wells and the Teme valley, covering town gardens, village plots and the longer farm-edge hedges beyond.
Tenbury Wells is a small market town where the Teme valley meets the border country, and the work here is a pleasing mix. In the middle you have compact town gardens; a few minutes out you find longer hedgerows along lanes, paddocks and the boundary of larger properties. Distances, access and the ground underfoot all affect how a hedge is dealt with, so we ask a few questions before we pick a date.
We handle both ends of that range. A tidy privet at the front of a terraced house takes an hour or two with shears, while a long boundary hedge beside a lane needs powered cutters and a plan for the waste. Whatever you have, we will tell you plainly what the work involves and how often it should be repeated.
Town hedges in Tenbury Wells are mostly there to give privacy and a tidy frontage, so the priority is a clean, even line at a sensible height. Privet, laurel, Lonicera and box are the common choices, and all do well with regular light trimming through the growing season. We cut the top first, set a slight taper on the sides and finish with a check for stray shoots. Lane-side hedges are different: they usually need cutting once a year, often in late summer or autumn, and the aim is to keep them stock-proof and thick, not smart.
Valley gardens tend to be damp and sheltered, and hedges grow fast in those conditions. A Leylandii screen planted with good intentions can be well beyond a safe working height within a few seasons. We can usually reduce the width and top in stages, but only back to living foliage. Where there is little green left, felling and replanting is a sounder plan than leaving a half-dead hedge. Hawthorn and mixed countryside hedges can be laid or cut hard in winter and then rebuild thickly, which is far cheaper in the long run than starting again.
Where gardens meet fields or lanes, the hedge often belongs to more than one party, so it is worth finding out who owns what before a cut-back. We are happy to talk through the practical side with neighbours when that helps. Larger jobs produce a good deal of brash, which we chip on site or load and remove. Roadside hedges may need cones or a lookout, and we plan that into the visit. Before leaving we rake up and sweep, so the verge, drive or yard looks as it did before we arrived.
Tenbury Wells sits in the Teme valley on the Worcestershire and Shropshire border, which means a lot of our work here involves rural boundaries as well as ordinary garden hedges. We travel in from the surrounding countryside and also work in Ludlow, Leominster, Bromyard and Bewdley. If your property is down a lane or beyond a farm gate, mention it when you call. A few details about access, the length of the hedge and whether it fronts a road will let us give you a sensible estimate before we visit.
We also take on hedge maintenance work in nearby Ludlow, Leominster, Bromyard, Bewdley.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
Yes, we deal with both garden hedges and longer rural boundaries. Longer runs need machinery and a waste plan, so a visit beforehand helps us price the work properly. Hedges of that kind usually take a full day or more, depending on the run and the access, and we will explain the plan when we visit.
Usually chipping on site. The chip can be left for paths or mulch, or taken away. For woody material you want to keep, we can stack logs for you instead. Whole branches can go to a log pile, which is useful where you burn wood or want wildlife cover in a quiet corner.
Generally yes. Hawthorn and similar native species respond well to hard winter cutting and thicken up afterwards. We avoid doing it in the nesting season. A very overgrown one can take a couple of years to fill out again, but the end result is a stronger, denser hedge than before.
