Hedge trimming, shaping and cut-back work in Northleach, a small stone wool town where many gardens are exposed, and hedges need to be sturdy as well as smart.
Northleach sits up on the Cotswold plateau, and the weather there is not always kind. Hedges take the wind and the frost, and the ones that cope are dense, well-cut and not allowed to become top-heavy. Cold, windy conditions and thin soil on the high ground mean that a hedge which looks fine in summer can struggle later if it is cut badly, so timing and method are important.
That is the thinking behind our hedge maintenance in Northleach. We cut for strength and tidiness together, bringing hedges back into shape when they have strayed and advising on what to do when a conifer has grown beyond sensible limits. Most visits are straightforward, and a few call for some planning and patience. It is a plain service for people who want results.
Exposed hedges are healthiest with a slightly tapered shape: wide at the foot, narrower at the top, so wind slips over and snow does not splay the branches. We cut at the right time for each species, avoiding frosty days and the bird nesting period where possible. Beech and hornbeam, both popular in stone-wall villages, are normally cut in late summer, which also helps them hold their brown leaves in winter. Privet and Lonicera need more frequent, lighter cuts to keep their form. Good form is as important as neatness here, because the plant must cope with winter as well as look pleasant in summer. We check the finish each time. We aim for dense, even growth.
A conifer screen on an exposed site can grow tall and thin, and be dangerous in a gale if the base is loose. We look at the anchorage and the amount of live foliage before suggesting any cutting. A staged reduction works for some; others should come out completely. Broadleaf hedges such as hawthorn and field maple can be cut firmly, even rejuvenated, and will thicken again. We will not recommend a drastic option without explaining why, and what alternatives are available. If a hedge has leaned, split or thinned, we will assess whether it can be pulled back into shape or whether replanting is more realistic.
Where a hedge divides two gardens or borders a lane, its height decides how much light and view each side gets. Reductions can be phased over seasons if you prefer a gradual change. We discuss boundaries with you and are happy to speak with neighbours if you want us to. All clippings are removed unless you ask for them left, and we sweep paths and drives afterwards. On properties with gravel, we rake and blow the surface to lift stray debris. If the hedge borders a lane, we also keep verges clear of cuttings and mention any sight-line problems at junctions for you.
Northleach is a small Cotswold wool town in stone, with a wide market street, and plenty of rural properties around it. Gardens may be bigger than in the busier villages, and hedges are often long. We work in the town and the countryside nearby, and also in Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold and Cirencester. When you contact us, a rough length and height of the hedge and a description of what it borders are enough to start the conversation, and we will confirm details when we visit. We look forward to helping.
We also take on hedge maintenance work in nearby Bourton-on-the-Water, Stow-on-the-Wold, Cirencester.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
A wider base and narrower top lets wind pass over and keeps the hedge dense low down. Square-topped hedges can catch snow and get damaged or splayed. Snow is heavy, and a flat top collects it, which can bend stems over time and open gaps in the middle.
Generally, yes. Hawthorn is tough and regrows well after firm cutting, ideally in winter. We avoid doing the work when birds may be nesting. Cutting in winter, before the sap rises, gives a strong chance of a thick regrowth the following spring and summer.
Yes. We plan access and waste removal around the field, close any gates behind us, and take care that cuttings do not end up where livestock could eat them. We also close gates behind us at every stage. Please say if you need them left open.
