Tree surgery in Stroud, where steep valley sides, terraced gardens and shared slopes make planning, ropework and safe access just as important as the cutting itself.
Stroud is set among steep valleys at the edge of the Cotswolds, and its houses climb the hillsides in rows and terraces. A tree in one garden may stand directly above the roof of the property below, which changes how any work has to be done.
We carry out tree surgery for Stroud households and landlords. Every job begins with a visit, because the slope, the access and the neighbours matter as much as the tree itself. A free quotation follows, setting out how we plan to do the work.
On a steep valley side, a tree's weight is carried differently, and a lean downhill can be natural or a sign of trouble. We study the base, the roots and the way the crown is balanced before pruning. Thinning, lifting and shortening heavy branches reduce the load and the risk of limbs landing on the property below. Because gardens are frequently stepped, brash is often lowered on ropes or carried in loads to a collection point.
Removing a tree on a hillside needs a plan for every section. We use rigging to control heavy pieces, particularly over roofs, steps and lanes. Some of Stroud's streets are in a conservation area, and some trees have preservation orders, so check with your local planning authority first. If a tree is helping hold a bank in place, we discuss what replacement planting or ground cover you might need so that the slope remains stable after the work is done.
Conifers on steep plots are a particular challenge, since the fall line matters and there is rarely a flat spot nearby to work from. We take them down from the top in short sections, each lowered or placed carefully. Stump grinding on a slope calls for judgement, because a machine can be unstable on steeper ground. When grinding is not safe, we explain the alternatives, such as treating the stump so it decays gradually, or leaving it to support planting.
Stroud's steep valleys mean that two gardens just metres apart can be at very different levels, and access may be by footpath or flights of steps rather than a drive. We are used to planning around this. We also cover Gloucester and Cirencester, and many of the villages between them. When you contact us, mention how the tree is reached and anything unusual about the plot. We will arrange a time to visit and prepare a quotation that reflects the real conditions.
We also take on tree surgery work in nearby Gloucester, Cirencester.

“Jim and Dan did a brilliant job on my 90ft conifer. Its a lot safer now and I have more light in the garden...”
“The boys did an excellent job... pruned my trees back and remove one tree that had split...”
“The guys were prompt & proffesional removed an old ash for me thanks guys”
Often, yes. We work from steps and paths, use ropes to lower timber, and carry material by hand if needed. It takes longer, which is reflected in the quote, but it is quite doable.
Roots help hold soil, so removal can loosen a slope over time. We may suggest reducing instead, or planting ground cover afterwards. For serious concerns about stability, ask a specialist as well.
It helps to talk first. You can only trim to the boundary, and the owner must agree to wider work. We can discuss options with both parties if that is useful.
