Pruning is usually the right first answer where a tree has grown into a boundary rather than outgrown the garden. Taking specific limbs off a fence line, a shared drive or a neighbour's side deals with the actual complaint and leaves the tree intact. It is also considerably cheaper than reducing the whole crown to solve a problem that only exists on one side.
A reduction makes the tree genuinely smaller and is the right call when the problem is not one branch but the whole crown pressing on a boundary. Done properly it follows the tree's natural shape, cutting back to growth points that can take over — not shortening every limb to the same length, which is topping and leaves weak, fast regrowth.
Removal is sometimes the practical answer where a tree is simply in the wrong place relative to a boundary. Whether it can be felled in one piece or has to be dismantled in sections and lowered on ropes depends entirely on what is underneath and how much room there is to drop material.

If a tree stands in a conservation area, six weeks' written notice has to be given to Bromsgrove District Council before work starts. A tree already covered by a Tree Preservation Order is different again. Worth knowing if you read about it in the news: local government reorganisation was confirmed in July 2026, and Bromsgrove District Council will be replaced by North Worcestershire Council. That does not happen until 1 April 2028, and elections in May 2027 will generate coverage well before anything actually changes. Until vesting day, Bromsgrove District Council is still the authority to contact about a protected tree or a conservation area.

It depends on the tree. If it has a Tree Preservation Order you need written consent from Bromsgrove District Council. If it is in a conservation area you must give Bromsgrove District Council six weeks' notice. If neither applies, no permission is needed. We can point you at the right check before quoting.
