On an old tree, less is almost always more. The instinct is to tidy it up; the better approach is to take out what is dead or dangerous and leave the rest alone. Veteran and over-mature trees respond badly to heavy pruning and well to being left largely as they are.
Old trees can be reduced but should be reduced gently. A modest reduction now, repeated in a few years, is far kinder than one hard cut — and on a tree that has been standing a century or more, that patience is the difference between managing it and finishing it.
Removing an old tree is worth a second opinion. Age alone is not a reason — plenty of old trees are structurally sound — and where there is genuine concern it is better identified properly than assumed.

If a tree stands in a conservation area, six weeks' written notice has to be given to Shropshire Council before work starts. That is a notice rather than an application — there is no approval to wait for beyond the six weeks. A tree already covered by a Tree Preservation Order is different again. That needs a formal consent application to Shropshire Council, normally decided within eight weeks, and hearing nothing does not count as permission. Cutting down, topping, lopping or uprooting a protected tree without consent is a criminal offence, and not having checked is not a defence. Checking is free and takes one phone call, so it is worth doing before you book rather than after.
There is a size exemption worth knowing about. In a conservation area, trees under 75mm in stem diameter measured 1.5m above the ground fall outside the notice requirement, and the threshold rises to 100mm where the work is thinning to help other trees grow. That covers genuinely small stems — it will not cover anything you would call a tree surgery job.
One thing that catches people out: Shropshire Council is a unitary authority and is not affected by the local government reorganisation happening elsewhere in the region. It remains the authority you deal with for tree matters.
It is worth mentioning at quotation if tree work is the start of something bigger. Knowing that a patio or a lawn is going in afterwards changes practical decisions on the day — where material is stacked, whether the stump comes out, and how much of the ground gets disturbed.
