Good pruning is mostly subtraction that nobody notices. Deadwood out, crossing limbs taken back to a proper union, and the crown left looking like a tree rather than a hedge on a stick. Where the aim is presentation as much as size, that restraint matters more than how much material comes off.
Reduction is where the difference between a tree surgeon and a chainsaw shows. Cutting back to a suitable side branch keeps the outline and lets the tree recover; cutting to an arbitrary length leaves stubs, decay and a flush of weak shoots that puts you back where you started in three years.
Removal is assessed individually. A tree with clear ground around it can often be felled; one standing over a conservatory, greenhouse or neighbouring fence has to be taken down in sections and lowered under control, which is slower and costs more.
Grinding takes the stump down below ground level and leaves a pile of chip in the hole. It is a different machine and a different visit from the felling, which is why it is quoted separately rather than assumed.
Fast-growing conifers reach a point where the homeowner cannot manage them from the ground, and by then the options have usually narrowed. Conifers do not reshoot from bare wood, so a reduction can only go as far as the green shell. Where the green has thinned to a few inches, reduction stops being possible and the realistic choice is between leaving it and removing it.
Cheltenham has extensive conservation area coverage — the Regency town centre and a large number of the surrounding residential areas — so a great many Cheltenham gardens sit inside one. If a tree stands in a conservation area, six weeks' written notice has to be given to Cheltenham Borough Council before work starts. That is a notice rather than an application — there is no approval to wait for beyond the six weeks. The council uses the time to decide whether to protect the tree with a Tree Preservation Order; if it does not, the work can go ahead and the authorisation lasts two years.
A tree already covered by a Tree Preservation Order is different again. That needs a formal consent application to Cheltenham Borough Council, normally decided within eight weeks, and hearing nothing does not count as permission. Cutting down, topping, lopping or uprooting a protected tree without consent is a criminal offence, and not having checked is not a defence. Checking is free and takes one phone call, so it is worth doing before you book rather than after.
There is a size exemption worth knowing about. In a conservation area, trees under 75mm in stem diameter measured 1.5m above the ground fall outside the notice requirement, and the threshold rises to 100mm where the work is thinning to help other trees grow. That covers genuinely small stems — it will not cover anything you would call a tree surgery job.
Worth knowing if you read about it in the news: local government reorganisation was confirmed in July 2026, and Cheltenham Borough Council will be replaced by Gloucestershire Council. That does not happen until 1 April 2028, and elections in May 2027 will generate coverage well before anything actually changes. Until vesting day, Cheltenham Borough Council is still the authority to contact about a protected tree or a conservation area.

It depends on the tree. If it has a Tree Preservation Order you need written consent from Cheltenham Borough Council. If it is in a conservation area you must give Cheltenham Borough Council six weeks' notice. If neither applies, no permission is needed. We can point you at the right check before quoting.
