Where a crown has closed up, the useful work is thinning rather than shortening. Selective removal of interior growth lets light and wind through without altering the tree's height or spread — the garden underneath gets brighter while the tree stays the same size on the skyline.
Reduction and thinning are often confused. Thinning takes material out of the crown and leaves the size alone; reduction shortens the crown and makes the tree smaller. If the complaint is gloom rather than size, thinning is cheaper and the tree prefers it.
Removal is straightforward to describe and rarely straightforward to do. The variables are access, what is under the tree and how the timber comes out; the height on its own tells you surprisingly little about the price.
Stump grinding is included where it is wanted and left out where it is not. The main practical question is whether the grinder can physically get to the stump — gate widths decide this more often than anything else.
Large conifers are the most common reason people ring a tree surgeon, and they come with one rule that decides everything: cut a conifer back past the green growth and it will not regrow. The brown is permanent. Before agreeing a height, push a hand into the foliage and find out how deep the green actually goes — that depth, not the number you had in mind, is the limit of what can be taken off.
Pershore has a conservation area covering the historic centre, and the Georgian streets within it contain a fair amount of established garden planting. If a tree stands in a conservation area, six weeks' written notice has to be given to Wychavon District Council before work starts. That is a notice rather than an application — there is no approval to wait for beyond the six weeks. The council uses the time to decide whether to protect the tree with a Tree Preservation Order; if it does not, the work can go ahead and the authorisation lasts two years.
A tree already covered by a Tree Preservation Order is different again. That needs a formal consent application to Wychavon District Council, normally decided within eight weeks, and hearing nothing does not count as permission. Cutting down, topping, lopping or uprooting a protected tree without consent is a criminal offence, and not having checked is not a defence. Checking is free and takes one phone call, so it is worth doing before you book rather than after.
There is a size exemption worth knowing about. In a conservation area, trees under 75mm in stem diameter measured 1.5m above the ground fall outside the notice requirement, and the threshold rises to 100mm where the work is thinning to help other trees grow. That covers genuinely small stems — it will not cover anything you would call a tree surgery job.
Worth knowing if you read about it in the news: local government reorganisation was confirmed in July 2026, and Wychavon District Council will be replaced by South Worcestershire Council. That does not happen until 1 April 2028, and elections in May 2027 will generate coverage well before anything actually changes. Until vesting day, Wychavon District Council is still the authority to contact about a protected tree or a conservation area.

It depends on the tree. If it has a Tree Preservation Order you need written consent from Wychavon District Council. If it is in a conservation area you must give Wychavon District Council six weeks' notice. If neither applies, no permission is needed. We can point you at the right check before quoting.
