Brickwork designed for Bourton-on-the-Water's stone cottages and compact gardens, from small walls and raised beds to steps and repointing, planned around tight access and a very visible village setting.
Bourton-on-the-Water is a popular Cotswold village crossed by the Windrush, with stone cottages, small gardens and busy lanes. Gardens are often tight, overlooked by neighbours and visitors, so tidy and well-proportioned work counts for a lot. Because so many people pass through, a tidy site and neat finish matter, and we keep deliveries and noise as considerate as possible for neighbours.
SPR Trees and Landscapes covers Bourton-on-the-Water for garden brickwork. In a place built mainly of stone, we are careful about where brick is appropriate, using it for rear gardens, planters, steps and sheltered corners while advising on other materials where the setting calls for it. We are happy to supply samples of brick and mortar so you can judge them against your own stone before any decision is made.
Most buildings here are in local limestone, so a bright new brick wall on a visible frontage can look out of place. Brick still earns its keep in back gardens, courtyards and service areas, and a mellow, softly coloured brick can sit surprisingly well beside stone. We explain the options and sometimes suggest a stone-faced or mixed approach for public edges. Planning controls may apply in a conservation area. Brick Flower Beds and planters are a flexible way to bring structure to a small garden without changing its character. Samples help you judge the colour before work begins.
Cottage gardens by the Windrush may have slight rises from the road, steps down to a back door or uneven ground around old outbuildings. Brick Garden Steps are a clean solution, and they can be built with a low side wall to hold soil. Raised beds work well where the soil is shallow or the water table is high. In small spaces, proportions matter, so we avoid oversized walls and think about how the structure will look from windows. Everything is built on firm footings with drainage where needed. We keep the working area as tidy as the lanes allow.
In a village with so many period buildings, repairs should respect the original. Repointing means choosing a mortar that is softer than the surrounding material, otherwise it damages the edges of stones or bricks. We rake out only what has failed, avoid smearing mortar over faces and finish the joints in the same style as the original. If a garden wall has partly collapsed, we rebuild it course by course using as many of the old units as are sound. A close match to colour and size takes patience but is worth it.
Bourton-on-the-Water is among the busiest villages in the area, so parking, deliveries and getting equipment down narrow lanes all need thought. We plan with small loads, tidy sites and respect for neighbours. We also work in Stow-on-the-Wold, Northleach and Moreton-in-Marsh, where the same stone-and-cottage character applies. Many plots are small, but the details matter more for that reason. A free site visit lets us measure, look at the existing walls and talk about suitable materials before suggesting a plan. Our visit is free and there is no obligation to proceed.
We also take on garden brickwork work in nearby Stow-on-the-Wold, Northleach, Moreton-in-Marsh.

Not necessarily. On rear gardens and in sheltered areas it can work well, especially in a soft tone. For visible frontages we would discuss stone or a mix. Local conservation rules can also affect the choice. Weep holes through the base let trapped water leave.
Yes. We often carry materials by hand or use small loads and barrows. It can add time, so we factor access into the plan and let you know what is realistic when we visit. Always tell us if the cottage is listed, as that changes what is allowed.
Often it is ideal, because it lifts plants out of wet soil. We build in drainage and a firm footing, and avoid placing beds where high water might regularly undermine the base. Carrying materials by hand makes small jobs take slightly longer.
