Tree work is priced per job after seeing the tree, and in Chipping Campden there is a particular reason for that beyond the usual ones: access here is frequently the deciding factor, and it is the factor least visible from a description on the phone.

Access is the biggest variable, and here more than most

A great deal of the older property in and around Chipping Campden sits on narrow frontages with long, enclosed gardens behind. The tree that needs doing is at the far end; the only way to it is through the house or along a shared passage; and a vehicle can stop on the High Street for a limited time if at all.

That combination changes the job completely. Where a chipper can park beside the tree, the material is processed as it comes down. Where it cannot, every branch is carried out by hand — and that carrying is the work, not the cutting.

It is the single most useful thing to be accurate about when you ring. An optimistic description of access produces a quote that changes on the day, which serves nobody.

The access questions worth answering up front

  • Is there rear or side access, or does everything come through the house?
  • How wide is the narrowest point — a side gate, a passage, a doorway?
  • Where can a vehicle stop, and is there a time limit or a permit?
  • How far is it from the tree to where the vehicle can park?
  • Is there anywhere on site the chip could stay, if you wanted it?
  • Are there steps, and how many?

Chipping Campden's conservation area

The historic centre of Chipping Campden is a conservation area, and the trees within it are part of what the designation exists to protect. If your tree stands in it, Cotswold District Council needs six weeks' written notice before work starts.

That is a notice rather than an application — there is nothing to approve and no decision to wait for beyond the six weeks. The council uses the period to decide whether to protect the tree with a Tree Preservation Order. If it does not, the work goes ahead, and the authorisation then lasts two years, so you are not tied to one date.

A tree that already carries a TPO is a different process: a formal consent application to Cotswold District Council, normally decided within eight weeks, with a right of appeal if refused. Hearing nothing does not count as permission.

Checking is free and takes one phone call. Cutting a protected tree without consent is a criminal offence, and not having checked is not a defence.

A note on the council itself

Worth knowing if you have seen it in the news: local government reorganisation was confirmed in July 2026, and Cotswold District Council will be replaced by Gloucestershire Council. That does not happen until 1 April 2028, and elections in May 2027 will generate coverage well before anything actually changes. Until then, Cotswold District Council is still the authority you deal with.

What brings the cost down

  • Several trees in one visit — the set-up and the access arrangement happen once.
  • Combining tree work with hedge cutting or clearance.
  • Keeping the chip or logs if you have a use for them — particularly valuable where access is difficult, since it saves carrying the material out.
  • Clearing the ground under the tree beforehand.
  • Giving the six weeks' notice early, so timing is not the constraint.
  • Being realistic about access at quotation.
