Tree work is quoted per job after seeing the tree. The two things that move the price most — what surrounds the tree and how the material leaves — cannot be judged from a description, which is why nobody sensible prices one down a phone line.
The six factors
- Which operation. Deadwooding, a lift, a thin, a reduction and a felling are entirely different amounts of work on the same tree.
- What sits underneath. Clear ground lets sections be dropped; a greenhouse or fence means everything roped down.
- Access, including whether the ground will take a vehicle.
- Height and spread, which set the crew and the equipment.
- Species and condition. Dense hardwood is slower; decayed wood is worked far more cautiously.
- Waste volume. A mature tree produces a great deal of material.
Ground conditions on the riverside

Describing the problem rather than naming the operation is the most useful thing you can do. A great many enquiries that open with "it needs reducing" want a crown lift — cheaper, longer-lasting and usually better-looking.
Permission in Upton upon Severn
Upton upon Severn has a designated conservation area covering the riverside centre of the town. A tree within it needs six weeks' written notice to Malvern Hills District Council before work starts.
That is a notice rather than an application — nothing to approve and no decision to wait for beyond the six weeks. If the council does not respond by making a Tree Preservation Order, the work goes ahead and the authorisation lasts two years.
A tree that already holds a TPO needs a formal consent application to Malvern Hills District Council, normally decided within eight weeks. Hearing nothing does not count as permission, and there is no size exemption for a TPO tree.
(Malvern Hills District Council is replaced by South Worcestershire Council on 1 April 2028 under the reorganisation confirmed in July 2026. Until then nothing changes.)
What brings the price down
- Asking for the cheapest operation that solves the actual problem.
- Several trees in one visit — set-up, travel and waste run happen once.
- Combining tree work with hedge cutting or clearance.
- Keeping the chip or logs if you have a use for them.
- Flexible timing, which matters more here than most places.
- Giving the six weeks' notice early.
What should not be the cheap bit
- Ask to see insurance, and check it covers tree work at height.
- Ask what chainsaw and climbing qualifications the crew hold.
- Ask whether they have checked the TPO and conservation area position.
- Ask how branches will come down — dropped, or roped.
- Ask whether they are a registered waste carrier.
