There is an honest answer and a comfortable one, and they are different. The honest answer is that height is the hardest thing to change about a tree, and there is a firm limit on how much can come off. The comfortable answer is that the height is frequently not the actual problem.

First — is it the height, or something else?

Worth establishing before you spend anything, because height is the most expensive thing to address and it is often not what is bothering people.

Only the bottom two are height problems. The others are density or canopy-position problems that people describe as height because the tree looks big. Getting this right is usually the difference between a few hundred pounds and a few thousand.

How much height can actually come off

On a healthy broadleaf, a sensible reduction takes around a quarter to a third of the crown. On a 40ft tree that is perhaps eight to twelve feet — meaningful, but not the transformation people sometimes have in mind.

Push past that and you are into topping territory. The tree responds to the stress with vigorous regrowth, so within three or four years it is back to where it was, worse shaped and structurally weaker, and you are paying again.

You cannot turn a large tree into a small one. You can make it meaningfully smaller, repeatedly, for as long as you own the house.

What topping actually does

It is worth understanding rather than just being warned about, because it explains why the cheap quote is cheap.

Topping cuts branches to a uniform length regardless of where the growth points are. That leaves stubs with no side branch to draw sap through them, so they cannot seal. Decay enters the open ends. The tree responds by throwing out a dense flush of shoots from below the cuts, and those shoots are attached to the outside of decaying wood rather than growing from a proper union.

So a few years later you have a tree that is the same height, denser, uglier, and carrying weight on attachments that are getting weaker. It is the one operation in tree surgery that makes the problem worse over time.

Conifers are a different case entirely

If the tall tree is a conifer — Leylandii, Lawson, spruce, pine — the limit is not a percentage, it is physical. These will not regrow from bare brown wood, so the reduction can only go as far as the live green extends.

Yew is the exception; it does reshoot from old wood. For everything else, push a hand into the foliage and find how deep the green goes before agreeing any height. That measurement is the limit, whatever figure you had in mind.

How often it needs doing

This is the question worth asking at quotation, because it converts a price into a running cost. A sensible reduction on a healthy broadleaf typically holds three to five years. A harder one comes back faster, because the tree answers heavy cutting with heavy growth.

If a tree is going to need reducing every four years for the next thirty, that is worth knowing when deciding whether it is the right tree for the position at all.
