Why granite needs so little upkeep
Granite is extremely dense and low in porosity compared with sandstone or limestone, which means it resists water absorption, staining and frost damage very well. This makes it naturally resistant to the freeze-thaw cracking that can affect softer stones over a British winter, and it rarely needs sealing to perform well, though some homeowners choose to seal it anyway to make cleaning even easier and to enhance the colour.
The maintenance that's still worth doing
A regular sweep and an occasional wash with warm water and mild detergent is usually enough to keep granite paving looking sharp. Joints should still be checked periodically for weed growth or erosion of the pointing, since that's a common weak point regardless of how tough the paving itself is. Pressure washing is generally safe on granite at a sensible setting, though it's worth checking joint material first, as some flexible pointing compounds can be disturbed by very high pressure held too close to the surface.
