Hedge maintenance is quoted per job. The usual factors apply, and there is one local one worth raising: on the low-lying ground around Tewkesbury, when the work happens can affect what it costs.
What you are actually buying
It is worth thinking of a hedge quote as three separate things rather than one number, because they behave differently and only one of them is really about the hedge.

The first and third are the ones customers can move, and together they are frequently more than half the job. Combining several hedges into one visit collapses the first. Keeping the chip on site removes most of the third.
The middle row is the one that only shrinks by keeping the hedge smaller in the first place — which is what an annual cut is for.
Ground conditions and timing
It also matters for the hedge itself and for anything else in the garden. Repeated barrowing across saturated ground compacts it, and compacted soil along a hedge line does the hedge no good at all.

Be straight about which you have. It costs nothing to say and it means the quote you get is the price you pay.
Where the savings are
- Booking annually rather than rescuing it every few years — the big one.
- All the hedges in one visit rather than one at a time.
- Combining hedge work with tree work or clearance in the same arrangement.
- Keeping the chip if you have a use for it.
- Clearing the ground along the base beforehand.
- Being flexible on timing, which matters more here than most places.
The one photograph that saves a conversation
A single picture taken from one end of the hedge, standing back far enough to get the whole run and something for scale in the frame — a door, a fence panel, a wheelie bin — answers most of what a quote needs.
It shows the length, the height against something known, the species, roughly how long it has been left, and what the ground and access look like. Everything else is a sentence: whether you want the faces done, and when it was last properly cut.
One thing that is not a cost factor
Height, legally speaking. There is no maximum lawful height for a hedge in England — two metres is the threshold at which a neighbour may complain to Tewkesbury Borough Council about an evergreen hedge blocking light or access, not a limit you must keep to. Even then the council cannot order it below two metres or order it removed.
(Tewkesbury Borough Council remains the authority for that until 1 April 2028, when it is replaced by Gloucestershire Council.)
