A reduction is a one-off intervention rather than maintenance, and the thing that makes it expensive is not the cutting. It is the volume of material that comes off and has to go somewhere.

The arisings are the job

A long hedge taken down by two or three feet produces a volume of material that regularly surprises people. On a substantial reduction it is frequently the largest single element of the day, ahead of the cutting itself — and conifer is the worst of the lot, because it is dense, heavy and does not compress.

Which makes two things worth agreeing before the work starts. Whether a chipper can reach the hedge, and whether the chip is staying on site. Both materially change the price.

Keeping the chip is not a token gesture on a job this size. It removes the disposal cost entirely, and there are usually places it can go — under the hedge line itself, on paths, or in borders.

And it combines well

If the garden also needs tree work or clearance, having it all done in one arrangement means one set-up, one access arrangement and one waste run. On a reduction, where the waste is the dominant cost, that is the single most effective saving available.

The cheapest time to have a hedge reduced is when something else is being done anyway.

What limits how far it can go

One question, and it is not how big the hedge is.

On the last row, cutting past the green leaves bare brown wood that will never green up again. Push a hand into the foliage — top and each face separately — and find how far in the green goes. That measurement is the limit, whatever figure you had in mind.

The rest of what drives the cost

  • How much comes off, in height and — more expensively — width.
  • Access for disposal, which as above is the dominant factor.
  • Working height — whether a platform is needed.
  • Stem thickness. Old woody growth is slow going.
  • What runs along the base. Borders, sheds and fences.
  • Whether the base needs clearing first, which is often the case on a neglected hedge and is worth including rather than leaving.

Price it as a one-off, not against a trim

A reduction brings the hedge back to a size you can then maintain normally, and the annual cutting afterwards is a fraction of the cost. Across ten years one reduction plus nine annual cuts comes out well ahead of three reductions — and the hedge is the size you want throughout.

What you are really buying is a line for every future cut to work back to. That is what stops a hedge drifting, and it is why a reduction holds afterwards rather than needing repeating.

Timing

Hard renovation on broadleaf hedges belongs in late winter, before growth starts, so the hedge has the whole season to recover and looks bare for one summer rather than two. Conifer work within the green is more flexible and suits late summer, when the cut holds its shape through the winter.

On nesting birds: it is not an offence to cut a hedge during the season. The offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 is intentionally damaging or destroying a nest while it is in use or being built. The hedge is checked before the machine starts and any occupied section waits.

Sequencing, if there is other work planned

Hedge reduction belongs before fencing, paving and planting — there is room to work, somewhere for the cuttings to fall, and the boundary reaches its final size before anything is set out against it.

It belongs after tree work, though, because tree arisings land on the hedge and the ground around it. Trees, stumps, hedges, clearance, fencing, hard landscaping, planting — in that order.
