It's not always an obvious decision, and it depends on more than just how the surface looks. Signs a repair might be enough
If the sub-base underneath is still sound and the problems are limited to a handful of cracked or sunken slabs, loose jointing, or a build-up of moss and staining, a repair or a thorough clean and re-pointing can often bring an old patio back to a good standard for a fraction of the cost of a full rebuild. This is particularly true if the patio is otherwise well laid, drains properly, and the slabs themselves are in reasonable condition — the issue is often just tired pointing or surface dirt rather than anything structural.
A partial relay, where only the worst affected area is lifted, re-based and re-laid, can also be a sensible middle ground if most of the patio is fine but one corner has sunk or cracked, for example near a downpipe or a tree root.
When replacement makes more sense
Widespread sinking, slabs rocking underfoot, water pooling across large areas, or a sub-base you can see has failed (often visible as slabs sitting unevenly or gaps opening between them) usually point to a groundwork problem that no amount of surface repair will fix. In these cases, patching individual slabs is really just delaying a full rebuild, and can end up costing more overall once you add up repeated repairs. It's also worth considering replacement if the layout no longer suits how the garden is actually used — a full rebuild is the natural point to widen a patio, improve access, or update the material to something that suits the house better.
