Textured, riven natural stone generally looks more at home on a garden path than a smooth, polished finish, and it has the practical benefit of being less slippery underfoot when wet. Mixing in occasional stepping-stone-style slabs of varying size, rather than one uniform size throughout, can also help a path feel like it evolved naturally rather than being laid in one uniform pass.
It's also worth considering where a path leads and starts, since a path that simply stops at a fence or trails off into lawn rarely looks finished. Anchoring each end at a clear feature — a gate, a seating area, a shed door or a change in planting — gives the path a sense of purpose and makes the whole route feel deliberate rather than incidental.
